Yes
I love using the Sony with legacy lenses as I feel I have to give a bit more input and thus more of a reward when I get it right ( more of a film camera experience) but something occurred to me today. As I normally use Aperture Priority mode that's the setting I have used the legacy lenses but is there a setting I'm supposed to be using it on ?

Thanks all.

I think they only work in aperture and manual modes. That's what I use anyway.

Glad to know you're enjoying the manual lens experience :D

Thanks Alan, unfortunately at present I cannot use the camera at all only having use of my left hand I fear dropping it. with the shutter button being on the right on most cameras it makes it difficult to use with my left hand only. At present I'm only using my little point and shoot. But I will get back to it at some point. As I'm on sick leave at the moment I have all the time in the world but cannot use the camera properly and cannot get any where due to being unable to drive. That said I always liked using my old manual film cameras but it made no sense to me to pay for film and development only to then convert to digital anyway when I could use a digital camera ion the first place. At least this way I still get some where near to the same experience !

Sorry to "hear" that. Here's wishing you a swift recovery. Is it possible to use a tripod at all?

Film lenses are not designed for use with digital cameras. One of the main differences will be the lack of a multi-coated rear lens which would help to deal with the greater reflectivity of digital sensors compared to film. The result is that many images will suffer from flare which will only be visible as reduced contrast.

Hmmmm. I just don't think it's the case that many images will suffer from flare.

I've been using film era lenses on mirrorless digital cameras for years, since the Panasonic G1 and actually I also used them on my Canon 5D and flare isn't a major issue (and I must have taken thousands or even 10's of thousands of pictures with film era lenses) but of course just as with some newer digital age lenses you sometimes need to be careful where the light is and where you point your camera. The results can very. Some older single coated lenses can flare a lot in some circumstances but it depends... as with some modern lenses... what you point them at and where the light is coming from and a hood may well help. Other newer and multi coated film era lenses can give results which are much more modern in look and in many cases may only be distinguishable from good modern lenses at wider apertures where they may give a more funky or at least less smooth bokeh (and be less sharp) or into the extreme corners where they may not be as good as the latest lenses.

When looking specifically at sensor reflections, I've only seen this with one lens on my Sony A7, the Sony 35mm f2.8. In this instance this camera and lens are known to produce this effect but I can't say I've noticed it with my film era lenses.

In any case the look these old firm era lenses give is for some a part of the attraction.

I would of course agree with that after all Digital didn't exist when a lot of these lenses were made But these are my findings so far, How many modern lenses can you get for £20 or less ? I only have one Digital lens, This is the original kit lens which works fine but does seem to lack in build quality, is horrible to manual focus and boy when you shoot in .raw looks like a fish eye lens due to the distortion. When shooting with the film lenses ( I have a number of them) they all look fine to start with. I know I could buy a super dupa Sony/ after market lens but referring back to the price what will I get for £20 ?
