Can anybody give me any first hand experiences with the Sony 70400G Lens?

I've not used one myself, but know people who have, and they all love it as a lens.

Great IQ, and very versatile.

Hi Derek

Just about to go and do something more interesting so will struggle to post images any time soon but I can assure you that the 70-400 is a REALLY nice lens with the advantages of f4 at the wide end, super fast focussing and great colour, contrast and sharpness.

Check out the Dyxum forum for reviews but I doubt you will find may, if any, bad reviews of this lens anywhere.

IMHO, a fantastic lens from Sony.

Regards

Gary

When I was shooting with Sony it was the lens that was on my camera 90% of the time, used it on the a350, a700 and the a900 hand on heart - if I was still with Sony it would still be stuck on the front of whatever body I was using.

It is a great lens, that said I sold mine and now use the 70-200 F2.8 with a 2x teleconverter, I sacrifice a bit of light, but not noticably so and in my view the 70-200 is a superior lens and I can achieve almost the same with a teleconverter on it, as I can with a proper 70-400 lens.

Ideally I would have both, but I would rather have another decent lens and a 2x teleconverter for the price of a 70-400. Just something to consider, but I am not taking anything away from the 70-400 which is great.

I have 1 of the first that came to the UK & never regretted it for an instant.
It's not perfect but it is the class leader in it's field.
There is a rumour of a refresh version next year.

the general opinion seems to be that if you are shooting mostly at the 400 end then the 70-200+2xTC is not quite as good (pretty sure that there is at least 1 comparison thread on Dyxum).
Mind you there is also a rumour of the 70-200 G getting refreshed & it is an older lens so may benefit more.
