Hi Folks! :D

I'm new to this forum as i recently got a sony a230 as my first dslr, i have managed to get some good shots from the kit lens but it isnt very good when it comes to macro shots, i was thinking of getting the Sony 30mm F2.8 Macro Lens, was wondering what other people can say about it, if its good, bad, etc. also if anyone could post some of their shots using the lens so i can see what it's capable of it would be much apreciated :D

Thank you in advance!

Dan!:)

I have been looking around at Macro lenses recently - after looking at some of the amazing images captured just in the home by some TP'ers - I was looking at the 60mm Nikkor Micro - but the general feedback has been a longer focal length is more suited so as to get some needed light on the subject with the shorter focal lengths you need to get very close for 1:1 image filling the View finder

I am however a Newbie myself and just my thoughts so far - Not Gospel though:)

I was looking at the 105mm F2.8 Micro Nikkor - Not that cheap but a few have gone on here for High three hundred mark........Best to buy S/H so if its not something you want to do more often you won't lose much money

You can also cobble together some tubes and use various other methods to get close

I do not know whats on offer for Sony lenses though - apart from the lens you mention - seems a short focal length to me - you would have to get physicaly very close to the subject

lol thanks for the reply, the lens im considering is about £150 (i think) on Jessops so isnt too much, just want to know how well they perform as im still not too familiar with alot of the jargon lol :D

thanks

Dan

If its any help I have the Tamron 90mm macro which came out second to the Nikon 105 macro in a photo mag not so long ago. I find it is well worth considering but the price may well be out of your budget. Remember if you want a quality lens then unfortunately they cost.

Welcome to TP Dan I had a Google and found these :)

Sony has announced the availability of the Sony SAL30M28 DT 30mm f2.8 Macro SAM, a new macro lens intended for use on Sony’s cropped-sensor DSLRs. With an imaging circle designed to cover sensors of 16x24mm or smaller, this lens is not meant to be used on the Sony A850 or A900 full-frame cameras (or any of Minolta’s film SLRs), but is a perfect match for all other Sony DSLRs. The Sony DT 30mm f2.8 Macro lens offers 1:1 magnification at a subject-to-sensor distance of 13cm, and has a Smooth Autofocus Motor on board (hence the SAM abbreviation in the name)

Looks like a great lens to me :)

what are you taking macro shots of?
If it's something that may be spooked (insect etc.) then you may well want something with a larger working difference but if it's coins, stamps etc. it should be fine.
afaik it's sharp.

Thanks for the extra info, i would love to do some insect photography but tbh i can sneak up on them ok :D would also be doing alot of still objects like coins, stamps etc :D

I've got the 30mm macro and has been said if your aim is insects and bugs etc the longer options are probably better, but for non moving objects coins stamps etc where getting up close is not a problem it is very good. It is sharp even wide open and for the money is worth while in my opinion

cheers Stan, are there any lenses above 90 you would recommend?
not forgetting the Minolta/Sony 100mm or if you want to push the boat out a Tamron 180mm (or Sigma equivalent).
