I recently got in to digital after a 10 year break and Im only used to using film. I have two controls on my Sony 24-105 lens, bought recntly. One for zoom and one for focus. In the old days using a film camera I was able to disconnect the lens and open & close the appeture manually but on this lens I can not. Is this normal. Many thanks for any help.

The lens is designed to have the aperture controlled by the camera, so does not have a way of setting a specific aperture on the lens itself.

However, this operation is mechanical. so when the lens is removed from the body if you want to just check the aperture blades are working correctly this is fairly simple.

Put the end cap on the lens (IE The one that goes where the body would be). Then look into the lens from the front and turn the end cap ~1/8 of a turn (this should be the limit of free rotation) - you should be able to see the aperture close as you do this (and open when you turn the cap back).
