Yes
I know the Nikon 18-70mm is a good kit lens, but was looking to replace it with something that produces higher quality images, mainly for wedding, portrait, indoor use. Any recommendations?

Budget? If not nikon 24-70 2.8 would be on my list, and it is (one day)

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 Di is excellent, personally 50mm is a bit short for portraits though.

Whats your budget?

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and the Nikkor 2x-70's f/2.8 are also steps ups.

Budget stretch to a 24-70 or 17-55 both 2.8?

or if you want more length 70-200 VR.

Nikon 35-70mm?? Although you may miss the wide end like me..:'(:D

I'm going for Sigma's 24-70 f2.8 next week. Hope it's the right choice!

Great lens if you get a good copy, if your buying one best to try before you buy (assuming your not buying off the net) going by sigmas quality control issues, or better still if you can wait a bit longer sigma have a newer version of this lens, a bit smaller i believe and with HSM, in fact it may even be available now.

A Canon
Sorry, had to be done.

Never had any problems with mine :)

I like my 17-55.........

Still prefer the Tamron 17-50 optically, its just sooooo nice. Cheap, light, sharp as a knife!

And I've had both. Do a blindtest between them :)

Neither did i, but i was just pointing out that sigma's do sometimes have quality control issues and where possible try before you buy

I have both the 17-50 and 28-75 from Tamron. Definately a step up from Nikons 18-70 and both are f2.8. Ive used the 28-75 for portraits and it performs very well at 75mm.
Where in Kent are you? If your not too far from Canterbury I could let you have a look at these lenses, theres nothing better than first hand experience to form your own opinion about them.

Allan.

There would be no point, you have probably already done one and your results will show you to be correct.

I like my 17-55, quite simple really..........:)

Actually there's nothing in it really, the 17-55 has slightly better bokeh, the 17-50 is sharper wide open.

Either are very very nice, and a stepup from the 18-70 DX.

The 18-70 is not a bad little lens though, kinda wish i`d have kept mine for when out and about "lightweight".

Agreed. Actually I had to try other lenses first to appreciate how good the 18-70 DX is.

Anyone know how well the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 performs against the Sigma24-70mm 2.8 ?

Yes. TKO to the Tamron, at least in Nikon land.

See if you can find a Sigma 24-60 - its much better.

The new Sigma 24-70 with HSM is supposed to be an optical improvement on the current one, so I'd definately hold off buying the non-HSM version. Its prioper HSM too with FTMF so it's likely to be very good as they only put real HSM in the good stuff.

That's the one to watch right now.

Thanks PD  i did actually have the sigma but sold it a few months ago it was a bloody good copy too, i kind of regret selling it now, i was looking at the Tamron as i believe it's smaller and lighter, but i may just wait and see what this new offering from sigma is like, unless i win the lottery on Saturday and the it will be then Nikon 24-70mm all the way
