Something Amiss With My PC

Yes
So there seems to be something amiss with my PC, all started a couple of days ago when I noticed a lot of whining and noise coming from the CPU fan

Each time I open a web page or a new topic on here the CPU fans does a little spasm, do anything thing slightly intensive and it has a fit.....

CPU fan speed - Min: 1377 RPM / Max: 2356 RPM

CPU activity - Min: 2% / Max: 100%

CPU Temperature - Min: 38 °C / Max: 61 °C

As I said this only started happening a few days ago, I have not made any system changes, have also do a full virus scan that came up clean

Anybody have any thought or ideas on what the problem may be?

First thing I would do is make a complete backup of everything if you haven't already done so, then you can start to selectively investigate.

Need to know more about system spec though.

Core i5 4440

Win 7 Home Premium running on a Samsung SSD

8GB DDR3 RAM

4GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 630

MOBO is a MSI Z87-G43

Sure it's not the gpu fan kicking in? Your temp seems fine......l

Do u have cpucore software? Or a temp monitoring package?

What fans are they? Can you swap a new fan in and see if that cures it? Is the heatsink full of dust?

Heat sink is free of dust, have new CPU fan arriving in next couple of days.

The temps only go bananas if you are doing something slightly intensive - for instance I was working on a pic in Photoshop last week and the PC handled it no problems without a murmur, today it cant handle it at all

Is it a stock cooler or an aftermarket one? If so, which one?

Just a stock cooler, I do nothing more intensive that a little bit of Photoshop once in a while and the stock cooler can usually handle that OK.

I have an after market one on the way though

It is like each command you give the PC makes the CPU spike way more than it should

Probably the bearings in the CPU fan in that case - the stock ones do wear out.

If you want a quick fix for a few days you could lubricate the bearings in the fan. Best solution is what you have done - replace the cooler with a better one.

Which one have you ordered?

Are you sure the CPU is spiking more than it used to, as a result of the activities you undertake?
What processes are causing the spike?

Have you tried using any of the sysinternals tools to investigate/confirm this behaviour?

My suspicion is, as others have inferred, you've just possibly not noticed the behaviour before, but due to some change in the phsyical condition of your fan, now it's more noticeable.
Are the PSU and case fans still working as they were?

61C at max load is perfectly fine, allmost too good to be achieved with a stock cooler. Agree with above posts, change the cooler and see :)

With the cold weather out there, maybe you turned up your central heating, and the room is a bit too warm for the computer's liking, specially if the computer happens to be within reach of one of those radiators?

Another option could be something fell over the side, and is blocking the case's air holes, therefore blocking the air intake, so heating it up?

Did you place your computer on the floor, specially with a thick pile carpet?

Well, otherwise, all I can suggest is same as everyone else above did: Heatsink full of dust? Did you change software settings? Is fan old and wearing out? And so on.

I would strongly advise you to re-read the posting of the first person who replied to your posting. Backup before you stick your sticky fingers into the computer to find out what's wrong with it.

computer cases are renowned for acting like vacuum cleaners you could check intakes and case for fluff build up

if its whining rather than just sounding like the fan has sped up then its probably the fan bearings. Stock coolers were never the best for performance/longevity under load (although as someone else said 61c under max load isn't too shabby).

Thanks for the replies everybody, they are appreciated.

I keep my PC on the desk and regularly clear out dust and also have filters on the intakes which get cleaned regularly as well.

I have a new CPU cooler arriving tomorrow so will see how things go once I have it installed

Open Task Manager, click the Processes tab. Sort the CPU utilisation % in descending order. Watch which processes jump to the top when the CPU spikes, it will give you a clue if the issue is software related or not.

If you're changing the CPU cooler make sure you clean off all the old thermal paste from the CPU before applying the new thermal paste.

Thanks once again folks

I am somewhat proficient in computers etc.

However you can't know it all hence my post here

New CPU fan installed

No more whining noise and mush better results

CPU fan speed - Min: 777 RPM / Max: 857 RPM

CPU activity - Min: 0% / Max: 60%

CPU Temperature - Min: 31 °C / Max: 43 °C

Well new graphics card installed and running nicely

Windows experience index is a respectable 7.0
