I’m out at the moment taking pics with my OM-1n but I think there’s a problem. When I loaded the film I didn’t notice that the counter was at 32.

When I advanced it 2-3 times the winder moved clockwise so I thought it might be ok but looking at the counter now after taking about 8 shots it shows ‘E’ which I guess means empty and it isn’t moving if I click the shutter.

I’m guessing that’s not good and I doubt I’ll get any images from this?

Just because the counter appears to be stuck doesn't mean the film isn't advancing or being properly exposed. If the rewind knob turns anti-clockwise when you use the lever to advance the film, then all is probably OK.

If the rewind knob is rotating when you wind on to the next frame every thing should be working fine. what ever the counter says..
Back wind the rewind knob to take up any slack first, or you might not notice it rotating.

Thanks Andrew - I know the rewind knob is turning after each shot but I’m not sure which direction it’s going in - assuming it can only go one way? And can’t go the other (wrong) way?

It can't go clockwise unless you are physically turning it that way by hand to rewind the film

Thanks Terry - I’ll take another shot when I come out of this cafe to see if it moves ok
My fault for not checking the counter when I started loading the film

The back fits into a groove on the camera body. In the groove above the take-up spool is a very small (usually shiny) button which pops out when you open the back. This button resets the frame counter to "s" for each new film. I suspect that this is stuck on your camera - this is quite common when the light seals turn sticky or when new seals have been fitted clumsily. It has no effect on the operation of the camera apart from the number displayed by the frame counter.

If the rewind crank is turning when you wind on you are fine.

Thanks John - I’ll take a proper look at my OM-2n which is empty at home. I’m hoping what you said about the light seals bring clumsily fitted don’t apply here as the camera has been recently serviced by a very well respected camera repairer in the TP community

Something like this happened on my Pentax ME, and someone here advised lubricating the "little button" with isopropyl alcohol (IPA). I did and after a few tries it worked!

isopropyl alcohol

I've never used this stuff but it may be an idea to have some to hand.

How does it keep once the bottle is opened?

Only asking as looking at prices it's considerably cheaper to purchase a 500ml bottle as opposed to the 125ml bottle four times ( should it be necessary to ever require that amount.)

I've got a tin of it that I've had for the best part of 20 years and it's still fine (although the outside of the can has started to rust!). Keep it sealed though or it'll evaporate.
