Hi everyone..

I want to get a good sharp macro lens and was looking at the Sigma 180mm. I think there are two versions of this lens, but I am specifically interested in the older (non EX DG) version as it seems to be going for around the £200 mark in good used condition..

Would it still be a good relevant lens to use nowadays? I'm not looking for the fastest focus, just some nice sharp photos..

Never had a problem with the one I owned ,only sold a few years ago due to switching brands ,only to switch back to canon a couple of years later ,lost a fine collection of lenses that way .
Yes it's a good lens with super reach and resolving power and as you will be on tripod with it you don't need o.s either ,

Thanks Jeff,

I did exactly the same thing a year or so back. I had a Tamron 90mm macro and to this day I am still sad for getting rid of it! The one I had my eye on has now sold :( I will be on the lookout for another one..

I had this Sigma 180mm macro and loved it. Super sharp, the only thing missing is the is but the new version with is is very expensive. Use on a tripod or monopod for best results.

Thanks for the advice and info guys!

What are you aiming to shoot?

Mainly just flowers and wide aperture portraits.
A shorter lens can be better for flowers as working distance is less of an issue but better dof is more important.

Am I right in thinking the 180mm would have better dof campaired to a 100mm?

Depends on what you mean by better.

The 180 will give less dof than the 100
For flowers 60mm may be better.

So if I understand right the 180mm will have a thinner in focus area than the 100mm?
