Last night we were sat chatting with the landlord of our local pub, his friend is a local farmer and every summer he opens up his barn for the landlord to hold a 'barn dance' to raise money for local charities. It's a great night and sells out very quickly. On the front of the tickets is printed, for obvious reasons, " NO SMOKING IN THE BARN", there is a smoking area just outside the barn, anyway last weekend during the barn dance, the landlord could smell something odd, he ran inside the barn to see a young lady had decided to light a bloody flare in the barn and was dancing around with it !! When he confronted her , asking her to leave she made a real fuss saying " yeah but I'm not smoking, it doesn't say no flares on the ticket".......These people live amongst us.

Where do these idiots buy flares anyway? The whole idea of t***s having flares is ridiculous, let alone the way the use them in crowds at footie matches, gigs, etc.

Should have stuck the flare where the sun don't shine, see if she buys one next year, ar**hole, could be where the flare goes, or my description of her

I think they are used in an emergency situation by sailors so imagine they are sold by sailing suppliers
Agree it’s monumentally stupid to use them in a public space

Yes, it beggars belief and I would not have blamed the landlord if he had thrown a bucket of water over her......for her own safety! And then thrown her out (oh and banned her from all future events.

One can see a lot of idiots with flares at The Tour de France and other professional cycling events. It must be awful to be cycling up a steep mountain into a mass of flares (Chris Froome had Asthma as well). I see these flares at some F1 events as well with huge clouds of smoke over the track. Flares should be banned for all sporting events apart from the emergency services.

Sure they are banned from many, but if you have 2 stewards and a 100 folk with flares?

There are plenty of police with the Tour. In the case of F1, they could search people on the way in. Also if flares were banned, I suspect not
many would then attempt to take them, particularly if the penalties were severe.

People like this are not part of the human race, they are human waste.

That's appalling. They should be treated as licensed explosives!
Unfortunately when I looked it seems they are classed as pyrotechnics i.e. a type of firework as they are not any form of explosive.

I didn't know that they're available to the general public, and frankly (although I'm generally against most restrictions) I'm surprised that they are, and am also surprised that people seem to be willing to spend so much on them - £7 each!

Having said that, on the farm we do carry red smoke flares in all tractors and similar vehicles, potentially very useful in an emergency in daylight and if there isn't a strong wind, never had to use them and I hope that we never do.

hate flares when i see them being used in the tour it makes me angry

Decades ago, the local farmers ran a CB Radio network and recruited several locals as listeners. My wife would keep the receiver tuned in to the "emergency" band while she was working at home. She never had to pick up the 'phone but a few incidents were dealt with by the volunteers, some of them urgent.

I wonder if any such networks are still running or if they've all been replaced by cell phones.

Had a couple of RC models shot down by CB while flying on Woodbury common.

Not as such, but we do have a local system. Mobile phone reception has improved but is still very patchy. A few years ago I had a simple but dangerous accident, slipped on wet steps, broke a few ribs and couldn't get hold of anyone via mobile, I was hurt, soaking wet and gettiing very cold. I eventually managed to get myself indoors without help but learned from it, and we then got a licenced 2-way system for emergency use. Only had to use it once but it worked perfectly "Fire fire fire, main gate top field"

And I once had to ring a neighbouring farmer when I received a "silent" phone call from someone on our farm, he left his harvesting, he and his workers spread out and found her, all was well as it happened, but farms are very dangerous places, especially as people work alone with dangerous machinery and animals. Our red smoke flares are just another means of emergency communication, in case all else fails.

Most of the local farmers use variations of the same system and we can all unlock and change channels and call them if needed, and our own system can also call the coastguard.

Everything is set out in our emergency action plan.

If anyone wonders why we have labels such as these, now you know why.
