Yep, spending time on 500px is the quickest way to realise you suck at photography

Awesome, bookmarked- note to self, must try harder:lol:

Dont knock yourself to badly yourself with theses photos, some of them are great, but a hell of a lot of them are more created,in a computer than a camera :)

I'd disagree with that statement, the vast majority are well composed and in many instances take advantage of stunning light and/or excellent subject matter.

Have to agree, some stunning images there with great use of light and composition.

+1 on Colin and Matthew, plus I suspect many poeple don't realise how many darkroom skills went into producing a good photograph pre-digital. I don't think I've found very many photoshop type effects that aren't digital copies of darkroom skills.

The art of composition is frequently overlooked compared with technical exposure and "sharpness" (an over-rated concept), which is unusual as it's one of the few image attributes the camera can't get reasonably correct on its own.

Bingo. I said almost exactly the same thing in a discussion on a site yesterday, where a purist was harping on about how digital photography is some kind of cheap cheat. It's such a stupid, elitist notion.

Great link, bookmarked.

Some excellent points there Alastair particularly around the art of composition and I'd also like to add to that about how photographs can be enhanced by manipulating light when taking the shot, I know I do it quite often with my weddings with the use of exposure settings, WB settings with gels and light modifiers. A lot of the shots on that site are truly superb and showcase many photographers who have got the 'eye' for a shot and I believe that you either have it or you don't. I realise this may be a contentious statement but I have seen many photographers with superb technical skills who have degrees, diplomas and have been on every course imaginable but still can't take a decent shot as their compositional skills let them down.

These are excelent pictures and lets not take any of that away from the photographers... But much of the reason why they have got these shots is that they have put themselves into the situation where they can get them. They have travelled to remote parts of the globe... put themselves in strange and odd situations... in some cases risked lives to get the shots.

Most of us are humble amatures who if we put ourselves in the same places... rather than trying to fit in a bit of our hobbies at weekends and when we are off work.... could with practice produce just as good images...

Dont let these picks make you feel you suck! Instead let them inspire you to go out the box!

Couldn't agree more Colin.

There are stunning images on 500px, and anyone who argues that digital post process is "cheating" or "not real photography" is either stuck in the past, or simply just plain bad at it.

EDIT: I agree Mark, which is exactly why I got off my butt and started booking plane tickets and doing it myself :)

A lot of money is spent on upgrading kit, when the same money spent on "getting there and staying there" with the current kit would yield far better results.

I upgrade kit when it either breaks or wears out. My D3 will produce the same quality pictures in 10 years time as it does now. Getting a D3X would simply fill my hard drive faster, but the results are only marginally better and then only if viewed alongside each other and examined microscopically......a good image is a good image regardless of what it was taken with.
