Well finally managed to get another chance to use the lights and take a few more of Emma.

White background? Use an old slide screen, two lights bare on the background and a softbox on the subject.

put the blue gel and barndoors on....

and now use a brolly as fill light to the left.....

and finally no light on background....

Note: I have not played with the exposures or fill or anything as I wanted to show what they did straight out of the camera.

Most were shot at f8 or 11 on my D90 at 125th iso 200 wb on flash.

Flash units were turned right down (to about 1/3rd! ) so they seem to have absolutely plenty of power. Big proble is I now dont think I need or want better lighting, I have loads to learn yet from these and I am sure with more playing, even better results will be possible.

Oh and Emma's revenge:

Personally i think not enough light on Emma on 1 and 2. 3 works well but 4 has the best pose. I wonder what the back lighting of 1 with the model lighting of 4 would produce??????? (Well I kinda know what I think it would look like - just think that may be the best option IMVHO!)

hi dave it shows the differece you can get, how do you find the modeling lights on these,
have you any other lighting in use, any help would be great, is this kit easy to use, also do you get everything you need possible,
what kit was you using any flash on camera.

also these were jpeg.

Yes these wernt great as it was (again) a far too hurried session and as you can see Emma was reading a book to alieviate the boredom!

It does show what the lights can do, and certainly far better results are possible than I have displayed here.

The pics were all shot in raw and jpeg, but as stated no PP was undertaken (deliberately)

Yes, actually I dont like the white background (which I think is overlit anyway) and to achieve what you suggest would take an extra light (actually or use the cameras on board flash) I also think the fill has overpowered the main light on 3 & 4 - again more time needed and a patient model for the setup

Modelling lights are OK but not spectacular. They are ok to aim the lights as long as the room isnt too bright, but I havnt found they give a great idea of what the image is likely to turn out like.....its a limitation of low cost lighting.

Really more time is needed to get the set up really right, next time I am going to concentrate on one lighting set up and get it right, rather than keep changing. I have LR 3 and a nice long cable so will tether to my laptop which will give me a better analysis of my lighting.

Next investment will be a background, probably this one:

I think a 2 light set (main and fill) will work well with that and I have a snoot for a hair light if need be.

One thing that is worth saying, these lights are small yet take up a load of space in my 17 x 13' lounge, I think the more poerful ones would be very cumbersome!

I thought it was just a prop - lol........ going to be really sad now and say from the bit of the cover I can see, I am guessing, "to Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee!"

Best thing is keep having a play, and enjoy yourself whilst doing it. Myself and SLimbert were trying out a few things using three flashes and an Argos dustsheet as a background the other night......... Results were surprisingly Okish (in a good way) considered was all trial and error........

"to Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee!"

Indeed, required reading for english lit during the hols....

Yes its fun, just experimenting at the moment......

yes more than actually. To be honest for the money I cant fault it, I doubt I will buy anything better, I'll just learn to use this stuff properly!

Yes, the white background is overlit and, as usual, the shot with the unlit background is by far the best.

The colour is way off, and varies from one shot to the next, which is to be expected with cheap lights, and the exposure also varies from shot to shot, again to be expected.

But you've shown that you can get promising results, provided that you're prepared to accept that some shots need to be binned because of the inconsistencies, so IMO you've proved that even the cheapest lights can be useful - which is something that I've always said.
