Hi folks

Anyone know or willing to speculate about an upgrade to the EOS 5D in the pipeline?? :D

I'll just budge this over to the Equipment forum :)

I'm hearing 0.9X crop factor. :boxer:

Bit soon I would have thought?

It is a bit soon CT yes but at the rate the ZA Rand is devaluatin against the Euro now I will have to wait a while and the 1D Mk II N is just a bit too rich for my blood.

Would hate to buy a 5D a week before the 6D is launched:bang:

oops sorry Marcel
This happens when I don't chat regularly:nuts:

there's often a bit of speculation going on at dpreview but most posters are pretty naff. gear-heads mostly with little/no actual substance behind their accusations...muppets.

As far as I can tell though there's little going on to suggest an imminent update...unless its of the 1dmkII to 'N' type shuffle. I like the 'if it ain't broke' approach, and seems to me there's not much wrong with the 5D is there

Hi, speaking to a canon dealer in swindon the other day he said that Canon normally release new models once o twice a year and that the 30D was likely to be the next in line for a revamp as its functionality is not dissimilar to the new 400D but the price between them is. They also said that it was to bring the 30d inline with its competitors the new Nikon 10MB unit. consequently Fuji are in Feb i believe launching the S5 Pro (I have an S2 and love it out of the nikon fits) but Fuji are keeping there pixelation at the same level but are exploring new technology to make the quality better not by pixel saturation but by better CCD interpretation (not a boffin so don't know the techy details) hence the S5 will be staying at 6million pixels. Itwas what i was told, so don't shoot the messenger OK

Personally I take what the dealers have to say with a pinch of salt. In most cases they have as much information and speculating abilities as any one of us.

My money would go on the 5D being the next in line for - something - and maybe the 1DIIN if they are feeling brave.
The 30D hasn't really been out long enough to warant an upgrate IMO

I wouldn't be surprised if both the 30 and the 5 got freshened up a little. Canon have spent a fortune on their new sensor in the 400 and it's vibro cleany thing. It would make sense for them to spread the technology and costs across other lines.
A 10mp 30D level or a self cleaning full frame ........hmmmmmmmm :D

its far too soon for the 30d to be refreshed already !

I would say the 1 series both need a tweak, the 1ds is a bit older now, and the 1dmk2n has been about a while, the 5d may be due a refresh as well !

I would still buy a 1d 2n as i am very unlikely to be able to push even that let alone something more powerful ! lol

I agree with Ian and Richard, the 30 has only been on sale for about 6 months or so. It's way too soon to be upgrading it yet.

IMO the 5 may be inline for a polish and a tweak next.

The sensor in the 30D is well over 2 years old and as we all know it's just a 20D with a few extra bolted on tweaks.

It still takes great images but in the world of rolling tech my bet is that it'll be replaced in Feb 07 with a 10 or 12mp sensor, ICS and Digic 3 along with a 1Ds MKIII and a new 1D & 5D upgrade coming in Aug 07.

Let's be honest, folks, apart from the new software the 30D (IMHO) never really was an upgrade from the 20D. I mean let's get real.... BIGGER SCREEN and spot metering:bonk: Oh yes and off course one extra second in the buffer....

The main reason why I started this thread was that I am considering flogging my 350D with grip,2nd battery and 17-85 lens with hood.

Now at +- 40K the 5D is just not a reality now. The 30D to me is a much better upgrade from the 350D than the 400 would be.... or am I missing something??

Then , off course , they launch the 35/40D.....:bang:

What to do?... what to do?

LOL. How the game has changed. Nikon used to bring out a new 'F' series flagship film camera about every 8 years or so, now with the rate of development in digital cameras we're lucky if the latest model lasts 18 months.

The truth is is Anton, that the 20D, 30D, or 400D are all capable of doing pretty well all you are likely to ask them, and none of them are going to cease to be useful photographic tools, just because Canon bring out a new model with the latest gizmos. Given the rate at which new models come out now, you're never going to stay ahead of the game without spending an awful lot of money.

Buy the best you can afford certainly, but while you're agonizing over which one, you could be using it and taking great images. ;)

Spot metering is a worthwhile consideration. The larger screen, while being nice, still doesn't enable conclusive decisions about sharpness, you still need your computer to really decide.

Hey Chewey

I have the 20D wouldn't mind getting the 30, in fact I am already phoning around for prices. Fact is I would also like some input into how long one should hold on to a body.

O.K. hope I make sense but here goes:
1)I would hate to buy the 30 if the 35D:thinking: OR 40D launches a week later
2)I try really to upgrade as I go.That being said I do not consider going from the 350 to the 400 an upgrade.

If I get the 350 sold I would either buy the 30 immediately or hang on if a 35/40D launch is imminent.

3)I would appreciate any input from all about the lifespan of a D-SLR.My need is for two bodies, possibly three at a squeeze.

The question now is:when do I sell the body off while it still has a bit of value?

Thanks to all who respond:thumbs:

Ive only just got my 5d... Please dont let them release an update version this soon or Ill cry like a girl.

Like you I was thinking of upgrading my 350D for a 30D then out came the 400D - so expecting the 40D to arrive possibly cheaper that the 30D . . .decided to wait and spend my pennies on the Sigma 70-200 2.8 glassware that will outlast the bodies. Do you think the first camera I bought new (zeis icon 12 on 120 folding with 4.5novar) is due for upgrade? Over 50 years old and still produces a negative to be proud of! I can't see the plastic - sorry polycarbonates of today lasting that long. It's all good for trade!

Welcome to the 5D club. I agree with CT, your camera is still going to take great pictures, imo it will still be a while before they upgrade the 5D. And at best I think it will have sensor cleaning and maybe 5fps. I don't think it will have weather sealing as that would take it to close to the 1D's. Just enjoy what you have.

This is absolutely to the point. Hence my buy one now comment. They'll always be a better, bigger, faster fish just aroudn the corner ...

Guys I agree and you all have it right on the penny.

The one more thing I would like to have some feedback on is how long could one expect a body to last? Is it therefore possible to determine a time at which you should sell off and upgrade?

I would not like to sit with 5 or 6 bodies with no 2nd hand value in 4 years from now.

4 years might be quite a long time if I'm being honest.

Just think about what was released in 2002?
The 10D was released in 2003, and while it's still a good camera, it's starting to lag behind the major forerunners now.
Same with the Nikon D100 in 2002.

I don't think theres a hard and fast rule about when you should sell up and upgrade.
Just look at the 20D, that's still a very very popular camera. Some people are selling and upgrading, but mostly to go higher in the chain, IE to the 5D or the 1d.

The only reason I went with a 30D instead of a 20D was because I could A: get it on finance, and B: I future proofed myself for another couple of years IMO.

I expect the 30D to still be popular in a couple of years time at least, and more importantly, I dont expect to outgrow it for some time, which I think is the key argument here. When do you think you will outgrow the camera and need something more?

5d upgrade?

well my moneys on it having an EFH mount, new from canon this allows fitment of all EF lenses as well as allowing attachment to the hubble space telescope.
it will also have a 15inch hardened steel blade on the front, this will be used mainly for the purpose of killing other photogs so you can get the "exclusive" shot, as well as seeking out nikon users and poking them.
my money is also on an upgrade to the 1Dsmk2 which while functionally identical to its predecessor has "nikon users smell of peepee and lack full framey goodness" stamped across the back

LMAO Good one.

I wonder if this blade attachment would be available as a separate purchase for other camera owners?

When I bought my 10D, based on the previous aps-c dslr lineup from Canon, I thought I would be buying every other model.
I got a 20D 4 months after it was released because it fixed many of my 10D frustrations that were holding some of my photography back. I have skipped the 30D though and may look at the next model when it comes out to see if enough of the 20D annoyances have been worked on...

I'd say buy a camera and expect it to be worth 1/4 what you paid for it in three years - and the new model in 3 years might just have enough features to upgrade (I think the sizable feature improvements betwen 10D and 20D was a rare occurance)
