Not sure whether this fits in with you guys, but my dad is looking to purchase a Telescope nothing too fancy probably something like this

But he would like to be able to attach my Canon 40D to it, what would I need. I have seen about some T-adapter and T-rings and Barlow lenses, but not sure what these barlow lenses are.

Im assuming I need the T-adapter for the scope and the ring for the canon where does the barlow lens fit in?

Many Thanks in advance.
Matt

The Barlow lens acts pretty much like a Teleconverter/Extender does for a regular lens....ie, increases the magnification of the final image.

I suggest that you get an EOS to T-Ring adapter and then a Barlow lens with an inbuilt T-Ring thread. As with most things optical, there's a price versus quality factor to consider. Either buy very cheap (so that you haven't lost much when you sling it and get a better one) or search deeper in your pockets to make it worthwhile.

There's a reasonable explanation of barlow lenses here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barlow_lens
So it's basically like a teleconverter that fits between the scope and the eyepiece, or in your case between the scope and the t-adaptor with the camera mounted on it.

To be honest however, I'm not sure that setup is going to work. That particular scope isn't very large or heavy so a 40D mounted on the eyepiece is going to be a large weight to add to the eyepiece mount. You'd probably be better off with a much smaller compact camera which you would mount over the top of the eyepiece with a digiscoping adapter which would result in higher magnification than you'd get from the 40D.

What sort of photos is your dad hoping to do with it?
