Some advice about ebay please.

I recently sold a bike on ebay for £455.00.
Bike is paid for and funds cleared.

The buyer is arranging collection, I believe the buyer gets a QR code or 6 figure code from ebay that he gives to me upon collection and I enter this into ebay to prove collection.

Assuming the buyer ( or courier) gives me a 6 figure code, ( maybe written on a scruffy piece of paper) how do I know this code is genuine ?
Do I rush indoors, fire up ebay and enter this code as despatched ? will ebay immediately inform me if the code is incorrect ? I then return and refuse pickup and we have a 'set to' on the drive ?

A little concerned that I get scammed and the buyer claims he hasn't received the bike and ebay demand refund.
 
No Idea, I sold something recently on Ebay for fifty quid that needed collecting.
Like you neither the buyer or I fully understood the code business.
He gave me a number they sent him, but I couldn't find anywhere to enter it on eBay.

Perhaps ask to take a photo of buyer and bike similar to how DPD do on delivery, that would likely put a scammer off.
Be interested to know how it works if you manage to find out.

From eBay.

After you’ve completed your purchase, we’ll send an email with a collection code (a QR code and a 6 digit code) to your Messages - opens in new window or tab. You can either print off your email or show the seller the message on the app when you collect your item. The seller will scan or enter the code on the eBay app to confirm you’ve collected your item.

Looks like you need to use the eBay app to scan the code.

Ok, everyone who is interested. I requested a call back from ebay and a very helpful lady gave me the facts.
When I enter the QR Code or 6 figure code into the ebay app it will accept it or tell me it is false immediately . . . . result.
I was also informed that because the buyer is not collecting himself (3rd party collection) he is not covered by the ebay money back guarantee . . . . result.
This means if the bike travels down south via a number of couriers and is knocked about etc the buyer cannot claim he has 'bought a dud' and ask for refund.
I was all ready to cancel this and refund because I don't want any aggro. However I am now feeling confident I am covered.
I sincerely hope the buyer is genuine and I am over reacting
 
ive done a few collects and its all in the app, it works ok but it can take a few minutes of small talk
 
No one turned up yesterday and nothing heard. I contacted the buyer via ebay yesterday evening and said if nothing heard in the near future I would cancel the sale and refund. Surprisingly I received a reply. (poor comms throughout this sale) He apologised, said he understood my frustration and said the courier had let him down. He said the courier would/should contact me tomorrow ( i.e today)
If that failed all he could do was get a different courier. Basically, he said all the right things. I said I would wait a little longer and reminded him the courier must have the relevant QR or 6 figure code or I would not release the bike.
It is no problem for me to hang on to the bike and I have had £455.00 of his money since the 14th mar. The only problem is waiting on a courier, will I get sufficient warning if I am away from home or will he just turn up ?
 
Call today to say courier will collect bike between 1 & 4 p.m tomorrow.
Watch this space.
 
What's the odds on 2 or 3 'eastern european' gentlemen turning up without any viable codes. When I refuse to hand over the bike someone produces a sawn off shotgun ? lol
 
The End Game !
At 13:00 today a nice young man turned up in his white transit van. 'Breaking the ice' I asked him where he had come from ( expecting to hear Newcastle or similar) Hungary he said No I said today . ." hmm I cannot remember he said" He gave me the pick up code and I entered it into the ebay app. Not a valid code ricocheted back. Tried again, same again. I explained to the young man. Let me ring he said. Came back to me with a different code. Eureka it worked instantly. Ebay reports 'Delivered' on the Selling Page.
I brought the bike out, the van was full to busting with cardboard cartons of all sizes. I turned the handlebars and the bike went in snugly and was secured with straps. " Where are you taking it " I asked, "Hungary " he replied. " Everything in the van " I asked. " Yes " was the reply. " When " I asked. " Tomorrow " was the reply.
So, I surmise this is an importer buying items on ebay at request or speculating and selling on in Hungary.
As I explained I was uncomfortable from day1 due to many factors and that led me to possible scam. All sort of makes sense now.
Thank you for your advice ( although I didn't agree with some of it)
I'm going off to lay down for a while now in a dark room.
