Preamble:

As I'm shortly going to be buying an M1 MBP I decided to upgrade my old monitor at the same time. I was going to buy the LG Ultrafine 5k - developed in partnership with Apple - but they're not going to be available for months. However, as my existing Cinema Display really needed replacing I bought a mint and lightly used Thunderbolt Display yesterday as a stop gap. Given that it sits between the Cinema Display and LG Ultrafine chronologically (and it was a late manufacture date to boot) it might even suffice long term, as it's a brilliant display and just needs a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter to work with the M1.

Anyway, I hooked it up yesterday and all is fine - much better IQ than the ancient Cinema Display, and a much cleaner connection to my current MBP.

The problem:

I have no idea whether the new monitor has anything to do with it, or whether it's just a coincidence, but since then I've been unable to connect to my Officejet 8620 all in one printer. If I try to print or use the printer utility I'm told that the MBP is unable to connect to the printer. That despite the fact that I know that there's a wi-fi connection because I synced it on the HP Instant Ink page without a problem (the printer is telling me it's connected too). I also reset my print settings, removing the printer from the list and then adding it again; it shows up as idle, but I still can't connect to it to print, or use the HP Utility app.

I'm absolutely stumped - anyone have a clue as to what might be wrong, and what I need to do to resolve the issue? Oh, both the MBP and the printer have been rebooted more than once already.

No idea really but I have a Thunderbolt Display, though late 2012 Mac Mini and Canon and Brother printers and haven’t had any problems connecting either with WiFi or cable.

You mention WiFi but is it the same with cable connection?

I've not tried that yet because it's a bit of a faff. I will, though.

Glad you solved it. I periodically get exactly the same problem between my 2017 iMac running Big Sur and my HP 6830 office printer that is about 5 years old. It eventually sorts itself out

FWIW I’ve often flung connecting by cable sorts out the WiFi issues — no idea why.

A parallel case. When I first got broadband (ntl) the instruction were all for connecting using Windows & Ethernet. I tried over & ove and could not get connected. In ’desperation’ I plugged my Mac in and it “just worked”, whereupon I could then connect via the Windows machine too!
