Hello,

Purchasing my first ever softbox kits, looking for 32-36" octagonal ones, ideally as a kit - looking to buy 2.

Don't want to spend an absolute fortune, but willing to pay for decent quality ones.

Need the stands, mounts for the speedlights etc

Any recommendations?

PhotR from Amazon, excellent for the price.

The Lencarta Profold are a good price/quality combination.

Also their lightstands are great vfm.

But I wouldn’t necessarily choose to light such a large Octa with a speedlight, but if you’re intent, buy Bowen’s fit and a Bowen’s S type speedlight bracket.

Have to question why both octagonal

Mike
Me too.
Though I did like the look of the 16 sided ones that turned up in my search, it was probably from a GAS viewpoint

How about reflective (white) umbrellas with diffusor panels like e.g the softlighter? The Bowens mount S-bracket is great but I like to have a umbrella bracket in my bag too for versatility.

Re stands. I like my Nano more than anticipated and Im planning to get a pair of the 1051 stand. Not much heavier but taking a bigger load.

With some exceptions for specialised products/applications (for example when photographing wine bottles you would use two identical strip softboxes) it just doesn't make sense to have two identical light modifiers - restricts creativity and usefulness no end.
And, like Phil V, I wouldn't use speedlights for large softboxes - the built in reflectors stop them illuminating the softboxes properly, and the fact that sellers make them available doesn't mean that what they sell actually works:)

Take a look at Lencarta (but be aware that I used to work with them so not impartial) because they have a kitbuilder available that allows you to customise your kit https://www.lencarta.com/custom-bespoke-studio-lighting-kits

For speedlights I like my lastolite ezy box but obviously it’s square. Either that or a brolly but obviously there’s light bounce with the latter.

Nano stands are ok for just a speedlight and a small brolly tops, but I don’t particularly think that they’re sturdy enough for softboxes.

All depends on what you want to achieve. You’d be better off saving a little more and getting a two smartflash kit with different modifiers and good stands, far more practical. Speedlights have their uses but they will restrict you a lot too.

Thanks all, it's for my dad mainly but i'll be borrowing. He was advised by his tutor to get a octogronal box for some head shot portrait shots. So he decided he wanted 2 of them.

Managed to persuade him to just get the one and then consider getting a different one in the future.

Will take a look through the recommendations - thanks all

If the budget isn’t limited, I’d consider the Lencarta collapsible beauty dish, very versatile bit of kit, beauty dish and very round softbox in one. And their stands are great vfm.

But again, buy some mains lights, they’re cheap compared to decent battery powered lights, and purpose built for the task. If you want the after sales go to Lencarta, if you’re less risk averse, get some bargain Godox heads from an Amazon reseller.
