Softbox fitting for tripod

Ok guys hoping you can help me with this one.

I got my softbox and bracket through the post the other day.
Now I'm thinking that rather than buy an additional stand for it I was wondering if I could use my tripod?

Can anyone tell me if the little silver fitting on the top of this stand can be used to attach to the tripod and can they be bought separately?

you're better off just buying a light stand though, they're only about a tenner for a cheap one, and can go higher than tripods...
