Soft, at best is an inherent lack of sharpness in the lens.
Or a filter or glare which reduces contrast

Or missed focus

Or camera or subject movement.

So your technique can be great but your choice of gear will let you down. Or you can have the best gear well looked after and your technique can let you down.
