I like the idea of a wind proof jacket with excellent breathability and some water resistance. However most of the online reviews seem to relate to mountaineering, cycling and other more energetic pusuits. So anybody on here using a soft shell and care to comment on the suitability or otherwise for photographic use please

I have a Rohan one. Rohan offering some good discounts at the moment.

Its waterproof and wind proof.
Looking again I can see its waterproof but no mention of windproof. My previous experience of windproof fleece is that it has the breathability of a bin bag and after 5 min of any exertion I was dripping wet !

Can I ask please is this regular thickness fleece say Polartec 200 or thicker

It is pretty warm.
Not sure of thickness

Have a look at Paramo jackets. They are definitely not cheap but totally water and windproof, and very breathable. Mine is around 15 years old and still going strong.

I hope mine's going to last as long as yours - not something I can afford to replace too often!

I bought one a couple of years ago when my old goretex kag fell apart as I hate the hard, stiff feel of goretex to the point where I'd get soaked rather than put the kag on. Paramo are not everyone's cup of tea - they're sort of loose and drapy (mine's a bit on the big side as I need to be able to wear anything from a tee shirt to 3 layers plus fleece under it), but once it's on you hardly know you're wearing it. They pack down really small as well. I keep mine in a little stuffsac - bit like a sleeping bag.

As you know Paramo gear works in a different way from many other waterproofs, though to be fair it is so long since I have looked at other types of waterproofs that things might have changed. Agree about the comfort when in use.
