Hi just after some advice really,

I bought a 5d mk2 and 17-40L from Jessops in January. I think ive got a pretty soft copy of the 17-40. I know the 5d 2 will ask alot from lenses but i still think its not up to scratch compared to shots ive seen taken with the lens. And it struggles even to compete with shots taken on my 40d and siggy 10-20 even when interpolated.

My question is what can i do, am i entitled to take it back and ask for a new one? Or do i have to send it off for calibration or are there any other options?

thanks

Ewan

firstly handeld or tripod
secondly they look a bit under exposed and at f18 is far from the sweet spot for this lens.

if shot handheld 1/10s is not gonig to help getting a shake free image.

EDIT: also are you confirming focus by eye sight if so, not questioning your ability, however i think autofocus would be best ot test a lenses sharpness. best try a static subject and shoot from a tripod and go through the aperture range from f/4 to f/16 at most to see where the sweet spot is.

i always shoot from a tripod, ive just noticed that it was shot at f18, which is wierd as i dont normally ever shoot higher than f16, anyway the other shots from this evening are all between f13 and f16 and none are what i would call sharp.

i have done that, the sharpest is around f11, but i still need to have usable sharpness up to f16

Ewan, please put me right if I've missed something but you bought this lens new in January and 3 months on you're wanting to take it back?

I imagine it's still covered by manufacturer's warranty and it'll pay you to check Jessops' t&c before you take it back but I think I'd expect a hard time from them about why it's taken you so long to get to this point with it.

Hope all goes well though.

thats a fair point. I havent been able to get out and use it as much as i would like, and i wanted to give it a fair chance to make sure it was the lens rather than user error.

With respect, I think the store has every right to tell you to take a hike if you're expecting them to take it back, but Jessops are a helpful bunch and if they've got another 17-40L I'm sure they'll let you compare them.

Just shoot some side by side pics, everything identical, and see what's what. The only real way to tell is with a direct comparison. TBH, it's impossible to conclude anything from looking at screen images in isolation.

If the lens is faulty, Canon will sort it. If it's not been damaged in any way, they should sort it FOC
