Cant quite get my head round how I manage to get this

I got the shot after and checked the exif and its exactly the same... but I do remember the focus motor constantly adjusting so I turned camera off and back on and it was fine.

Centre focus point could have gone between heads of subjects or just plain old gremlins.....at least you took more than 1 shot

I agree - maybe the centre point saw between the heads. Having said that - your eyes should have told you the focus had missed - the camera does it automatically but you've still got to know it's getting it right - right?

Just noticed another crop opportunity for a different pic brb

Slightly different angle from the one I posted before.

Yea, will have just focused on the crowd you can see between their heads, you need to make sure the AF point is over where you want to focus, focus, then compose and take picture.

who was taking this picture - you or the camera LOL

If you get nikon viewnx2 which is free you can see where the focus point was on your picture, handy little extra

Alternatively my Canons do it as well.... Agree with the above comments. Just be more careful about your focus point. Not sure if you can select focus points, of you can just select the centre ones and focus on the face on your subject.

Dunc

You can select one of 9 focus points. I think you were on spot focus/centre so it focussed between the two people as that is dead centre of the frame. I also notice mine hunts a bit more on spot rather than wide which might explain why you were having problems.

I missed a pic of some sparrows sitting on a hedge. Camera focussed right behind said sparrows on another bit of hedge. It seems to be a quirk if there is some potential subject in the centre of the frame the camera seems to want to focus on that more than something else closer which is slightly off set. But sometimes it'll do the opposite and want to focus on something slightly offset. I have not quite worked out what is in its mind. I have many photos of sharply focussed grass with fuzzy ducks so I know how annoying it is when sometimes you miss what you were aiming for :)

Can't you tell the camera which AF point to use?

Take control! Don't let the camera decide :)

I use it on spot mainly now. Or wide if the subject is large and it won't get confused. Wide works better in low light. Choosing an AF point is too fiddly so I'd rather use spot and recompose :) It's interesting to see what it chooses to focus on.

I'm sure someone made a camera with an eye tracker in the viewfinder so it would focus on what you were looking at when you pressed the shutter.
