Hi

I often hear that people say they are being restricted by there camera, but how?

Surely a 400d has got all the same modes full manual iso,wb,AF etc so what other features do the upgrade in camera have that stops you being limited.

I understand the 30/40d will have better IQ, maybe More FPS but will it have more features that will unrestrict you???

Thanks

Mark

The biggest benefit for me was the body size (30D's over 350's and 400)....much more balanced with some of the bigger lenses on.
The other plus is the controls commonality with the 5D.

As far as the final result goes then I don't see any benefit as the extra functions don't really pander to my needs.

what are the extra functions? how can the 400d limit you?

Sorry...I wasn't quite clear about it.
The 400D wasn't a limitation in any way and still wouldn't be. The only benefit's I saw with the 30D was the body/lens combination worked better in my mits.

Once I got the 5D then 30D's were the obvious partners to keep the commonality of controls. I felt more comfotable with the 300D body than the 350/400's as it was a little bulkier and a closer match to the size of the film bodies I was used to.

The 400D is just fine....

Hi thanks for you replied, i wasn't trying to be rude. I was just intrested in seeing how t limits you and as you said it is mainly the feel and IQ not what it can do, that people upgrade for.

thanks

At the time I bought mine I had the choice of 350D and 30D. I handled both and then settled on the 30D simply because of the feel of the camera in my hand. It's like Bob says - it's just bigger and sits better somehow. The spot metering was a factor for me, but to be honest I don't use that a vast amount. The other thing so far as I was concerned was the 5FPS shooting rate - with the amount of speedway stuff I shoot that seemed like a huge bonus, and I was totally fed up with the much slower D30 I was using before.

Only you will know if you actually "need" any of the features on the next model, and only you can know which camera feels the most comfortable to you. The important thing is not to let "want" overtake "need"!

No problem Mark....I didn't read it that way either

The 40D handles digital noise much than the 400D.....I sometimes shoot at gigs in pubs where the lighting is poor and I used the 40D for the first time at 1600 ISO this weekend. Not much noise at all, whereas the 400D has loads of noise at anything above 400 ISO.

I couldn't get on with the controls on the 400D, I didn't like the lack of LCD screen on the top and only having one scroll wheel, so needing to go into the menu more.

Using the 400D wont limit you at all in any meaningful technical sense. All things and all pixels being roughly equal, the 400D is just as capable of producing the goods as any higher grade camera.

It's features and build quality which you pay for in going for a higher spec body. The 40D is good for 100,000 shutter actuations against the 50,000 0f the 400D, and the 40D has a tough magnesium casing under that outer polycarbonate body, which the 400D hasn't . Features like spot metering in the 40D are another reason you may want to consider that body, apart from things already mentioned like general feel and handling which tend to be very personal considerations.
