Yes
We have been looking for a headboard for our bed for a while but we haven't found one we liked, so I decided to have a look and see if I could make one.
Luckily, my cousin has a great man cave with all the right tools in which made the job 100% easier.

Made with 4 x used pallets, a 3 metre fence post, a length of 3x2 pine and a scaffolding floorboard (for the top plinth)
Total cost = £18.00

3 metre 100mm x 100mm fence post cust in half (2 x 1.5 lengths)

After putting them through the thickness planer, mortise cutting the holes for the bottom rail and using a router for the guides for the lats

Bottm rail in and lats on, seated in the routed recesses.

With the lats in place, we moved them about a bit to sort the gaps out and even the colours up a bit. The lats are made from the pallets, prized them off and put them through the planer then sanded them smooth.

The carnage

We then attached the top plinth, made from a planed down scaffolding floorboard. This piece of timber was a little bit twisted but I can live with that given the cost (free lol)

All sanded down with a palm sander and the sharp edges rounded off by hand.

Finished and in situ (still needs oiled and then anchored to the wall to finish it off fully)

Going to make a matching bedside table and bookcase at some point too :)
New bedding too haha

Pretty chuffed with it for a first go!

It's a good feeling making something from scratch.
Well done.

Yeah definite sense of achievement. So easy to go and buy something but this way its the only one :-)
Going to make my daughter a bed once she outgrows the cotbed she's in at the moment. My mate has a precision router so I might even be amitious and try to engrave her name into it somewhere!

Great work Nick, it looks great. You're not wrong about the right tools making things much easier!

@crofter your work sounds interesting, do you have a website or any photos we can see?

No, it's all word of mouth, I started pre-internet all those years ago, never needed advertising, I've got some old prints somewhere pre digital but I haven't taken any photos of the stuff for years,I'm slowing down these days, don't want to do too much, just enough to pay the bills.

Nice work, I'm always envious of people who can make things out of wood which looks good.......and that headboard does. Talking envious.....the photo showing your workshop - all those toys, sorry I meant tools;). I attempted to make a planter out of decking timber the other day, lots of sawing, screwing, nailing, swearing, and it looks naff.....back to the drawing board.......or buy one!

I'm just about to try some decking planters too. Maybe a DIY howto/beginners/tools thread might have some life in it? Wickes are selling 1800x120x25 decking strips for £2.99.

Not related to planters but I got a Kreg Jig last year, still to put it to good use. Makes some joints a bit quicker using pocket screws, also there is a few howto's or project sites related to the tool. I found this one quite useful http://ana-white.com/plancatalog

We have started the plans for a first size four poster bed for my daughter today.

Looks like its going to be fairly straight forward although I'll have to make sure its sanded to within an inch of its life so its smooth and safe for her :)

Going to use the same wood for the uprights and 2x3 lengths for the top and bottom frame, with pallet wood for the headboard and footboard bit, probably the mattress support lats too depending on their integrity :)
