I dont really have much of a clue as motorsport is my normal vice.

Kit wise i have...

D300
D200
Nikon 70-200 VR f2.8
50mm f1.8
12-24 f4
1 x manual speedlight

I've had a look on ebay and theres loads of cheap starter kits, now im sure there low quality etc but this is just really for me to experiment with.

Im unsure whats the best route to take either flashes or continues lighting for family/kids/newborn etc so could do with a few pointers and a ruff need to get list..

as i say this is just home studio work and not pro

I appreciate any help and tips guys

cheers

The general rule is that cheap continuous lighting is useless for people, not really enough power to get fast shutter speeds / low ISO's.

The key to lighting is positioning and quality. To control this properly all you need to start is a couple of radio triggers, a lightstand and a softbox to use with your current flash. (add a reflector for less than a tenner)

You can add more flashguns, brollies stands etc later, but a single flash is a great learning tool. Master one light and add another. etc etc.

If you want to spend some money, buy a decent brand that'll take lots of different modifiers. Cheap ebay lights have a proprietary mount and nowhere near the amount of power control you'll need, a starter kit from a reputable co. will be a better start.

If you're ordering from Amazon, get Syl Arenas book while you're there.

Also check out you tube. Syl has some good tutorials on there. Also check out mike Browne. I'm currently experimenting using my speedlite mounted on my tripod for now with a lastolite ezybox speedlite

thanks lads. i actually spent all yesterday evening watching Mike Browns tutorials and found them superb, especially as he uses the same body as me in most of them :)
