Not sure just `taking part` was ever enough for some, but in general when the prize/£££££'s become too attractive.

The money has certainly changed things but I remember when coming 2nd or 3rd was also much prized, even getting picked was considered an honour.

It's all nonsense, either do it for the 'sport' which should be an aside to ones main employment or not at all.
Either that or we're continuing the gladiator theme, feed the best to beat the rest for spectator fodder, which we all pay for in one way or another.
I know athletes do work etc and need funding but i'd rather see sport with no money involved.

Anywhere there is big money there will always be crooks and cheats looking to make some big bucks, why should sport be any different.

I'm not sure if sport is just no different or rather at the forefront ... if the allegations are true this isn't just a few 'Arther Daley' merchants but a global world power, including its Testing Services, its Sports Minister and its Security Services!

You could almost be talking about the US cycling team at the 1984 Olympics
