So how do you make your image files smaller?

I've heard of increasing image file size for magazines/competitions/etc, but how do you DECREASE image size?

At the moment, on my website, I've got a bunch of images that according to the web host are chewing through my bandwidth.
They're between 0.2mb and 0.5mb each, which I thought was nothing but apparently is a helluva lot.

So, on horizontal images I want the width to continue to be 800px and on vertical images the height to be 600px, so we've ruled out the idea of physically reducing the size of the image.

Any help?

800 x 600 - for web use - save at 72dpi quality 7 and you should end up with an image 200k or less. BTW I think you are talking about file size NOT image size.
No advantage in saving at higher quality for web use - just bigger file sizes as you've discovered.

Yes file size, sorry! My bad!

Thanks for that mate, I'll give it a go.

For the web you can really lower the DPI down to something like 35dpi, not sure if it will make a huge difference but worth a try to save every little kb.

Didn't we have this before... adjusting what photoshop calls 'resolution' will not affect your image or file size if your ruler units are pixels. A 800px wide image will be the same file size as another regardless of DPI/PPI.

If you want to reduce file size, use save for web, rather than save as... it'll strip the exif data and jpeg preview saving value Kb's :)

Won't make any difference. The DPI is only there for printing, and makes no difference to a computer based image file

Boo, I don't like it when people strip the exif. How much bandwidth are you getting through foodpoison? What is your allocation? All the image on my website are 640px on the longest side, and come out at around 150kb. My bandwidth usage is a fraction of my allocation. Maybe you have a more successfull website than me, or maybe you need to look a new host.

I get 35000 hits per month and use about 3Gb per month bandwidth, out of a total 200Gb allowed with my account.

OK thanks for that, I wasn't sure if it had an effect on file size.

I don't think so... Just lightroom, and as far as I'm aware all it does is load the images, which is what would be happening anyway.
I did have a HTML script running that would load a new image every 4 seconds - that annihilated my bandwidth.

Unfortunately there's not a lot I can do to check it since my website is down :bang:

I've spoken to the webmaster and he said I needed to reduce the size of my images substantially (file size) since that's what's chewing through my bandwidth

Edit: The thumbnails are actually reduced sized images, i.e. they're the full size image, just reduced in size for web use, and looking at your site Alasdair they're all physically reduced images. I should probably look at sorting that out, since every time someone loads a page they're loading the full image set.

Use a free program called batch file resizer from a company called at32

The program is free, lightweight, produces very small jpegs, it is very quick, it can do batches very quickly and you have the ability to add a watermark if you wish.

best image sw i have.

I pay £33 per year and am with Register1;
http://register1.net/vds.php
Support from them is second to non, and since moving from Easyspace, the website has vastly speeded up. 1Gb allowance is rubbish. Who are you with?

As for thumnails, as mentioned I use Pixelpost which takes casre of generating thumbnails. You just set the size of the thumbnail in the options, and each time you upload an image, the thumbnail is generated. :)

A guy at a place called 'redjelly'.
I'm going to get around to using pixelpost one day, but for the time being I'm going to just create an action on photoshop :p.

I'll send the link to my dad. I've already purchased the domain name, I'm assuming I can just transfer over?

Yeah, you will have to change where the domain points to, but if you contact your hosts (Or Register1's) tech support, they will be able to guide you through it. I've recently also transferred the Domain to register1 as well, so both the hosting and the domain name are under their control. This makes it easier for me, and enables me to edit my domain details easily. :)

Turns out we're paying £120 a year for myself and my dad. That's 100mb of disk space each and 1gb per month of bandwidth usage each.

I told my Dad he's bonkers for paying that and quoted him the Register1 prices and he gasped and sounded in awe :p

£120 per year!!! OMG! Lol, I think it is about time to change your host there.
