IMG_1224.JPG Been out today with my new Sigma 150-600 attached to my 7200 with shoulder strap screwed into the tripod mount,I was paranoid about it coming unscrewed and my rig falling to the floor .
Well it did unscrew itself ,and if it hadn't have been for this little lanyard , there would have been a disaster!
Phew!
 
I use a similar modification. Never had to rely on it but your experience tells me I've done the right thing.
 
I put a rubber tap washer on the thread before fitting to bottom of camera, this acts like a spring washer and so far it hasn't unscrewed one little bit.

The Joby shoulder strap has the rubber washer built in, plus a big very smooth and freely spinning bearing which makes it impossible for the strap to exert an undoing torque on the tripod screw. The silly cheap Black Rapid pivot was what put me off those straps and searching for a better engineered alternative.
 
It does have a rubber washer, I bought the black rapid based on its reviews, may have to try something different although the lanyard does do the trick.
 
Just looked at the Joby website , and they recommend lanyards for their slings!
 
When you say 'tripod mount' are you talking about on the camera or the collar on the lens?

I use a Joby with my tamron 150-600mm lens, and it's attached to the lens collar, but must say I've never experienced it loosening, I do regular check that it remains tight though
 
If I'm using a lens big and heavy enough to have a tripod collar then I'll use that as the mounting point.
When changing lenses though, you have to remember not to instinctively let go of the camera body once you've detached the lens. A "friend" once did this. ;)

I'm somewhat surprised that you fix it to the camera and not the lens tripod foot, aside from the risk of it becoming unscrewed, the weight of the lens hanging off the lens mount would bother me.

Yes , thinking about it that would make sense.
 
You can get a wee gadget called a Lockstar for this problem. Bit annoying it is an extra but it solves the problem.

It can damage the camera's internal lens mount, but loosening it, has a big lens in general is a lot heavier, my Tamron 150-600mm is just over twice as heavy than my cannon mk2, and 2.5 times heavier than my original 1200d that I used it with.

Also, when you're using a sling having it attached to the collar of an heavy lens, means it's better balanced, if you attach it to the camera body, the lens will constantly drag downwards... but use the collar you're find it remains level and just more comfortable when walking while you're not using it.
 
I keep meaning to change to using the collar after days out, but keep forgetting to dig it out. Done now :D
 
I use a sigma 150-600 sport ,I have a 490mm arca plate attached to the tripod foot plate ,attached at the front end of that is a two part op-tech short click strap ,another optec long click strap goes to one of the lens lugs ,the second half of both straps goes to the oblong ring that takes the quick release .
So when I go walkabout the lens is supported by two straps which I find gives a perfect centre of gravity when held up .this in turn helps with weight reduction on walkabout ,attached camera is a 80D with battery pack ,although I have also used a 1D3 on it .
This has now been tried and tested for well over a year in virtually daily use with no mishaps at all .it is also really easy to take the strap off for tripod use

My old canon 60d didn't come off too well when the sling I bought unscrewed itself. :(
 
Sometimes I find the clamp of my blackrapid strap works itself loose (caused by a fidgety right hand).....

But I have more recently taken to looping the camera strap through the BR strap or the clamp, as once or twice my K-3 plus TC has dropped 2-3 feet on account of said right hand disengaging the bayonet catch, once it is released it doesn't take much wiggling for the camera and tc to disengage from the lens...

or my K3 has suicidal tendencies. It doesn't happen to the K5, D500, D3 or D7100.
