I have had a plethora of packages delivered today and have received a mountain of stuff for my 4x5 camera. I now have 3 lenses (90mm, 150mm and 210mm) mounted in lens boards & each with their own cable release, wide angle bag bellows, girlies hair bands for the Taco's, paterson orbital processor, torpedo levels to ensure movements are straight and 100 sheets of Tri-X.

So why am I frustrated? The weather is fine for the first time for days and I haven't got any bloody film holders! I've ordered eight from three different sellers some of them early last week and still none have arrived. I will just have to work out how to use the 6x9cm back instead.

Ahh Ed, that is most frustrating! If you were closer I'd offer you a few of mine until yours arrive, but I'm in Southampton sadly. Hope they arrive soon chap!

Nice lens selection as well btw :D

Thanks, I do have my 6x9 back but just wanted to see if I could do it properly without making a cock up of it.

Just pondering whether to pull the trigger on a Schneider 47mm SA XL as well.

47mm?! Christ. That'll be rather wide! I'd love a 65mm Nikkor, but not got the cash until next pay day :(

How much is the 47mm you're looking at going to cost?

I'm not looking at it any more :naughty:

It cost me 779euros including postage.

It's one of these.

Jeeeez. Wish I had that kind of money! could get the 65mm Nikkor and a few boxes of slide for that! Still, nice work chap, looking forward to seeing the results from it all :)

You should have those DDS from me by the morning, they went first class post today :)

I'm waiting to get the iron work (most of which I think may be magnesium) from my speed graphic back so I can put it back together and take some piccies, a mate of mine is powdercoating it all while I re-cover the body so it should be very smart when we are done. I'm waiting to get the 178mm f2.5 AeroEktar on it that is sat next to me, expect lots of extreme DOF and mental bokeh shots for the first box of film :).

supposedly so, I keep meaning to go and wave it about near a geiger-muller meter and find out if its REALLY that bad.

It's radioactive?! What the jeb is it made from?!

Additive in the glass, Thorium oxide. Low dispersion and high refractivity.

Haha, want a laugh, I popped out to the front of the house with all three lenses, 6x9 back and Sekonic 758D I am under an old black fleece which I am using as a focussing sheet when I hear a vehicle pull up up the road, i nearly pooped my pants when the driver tapped me on the back to ask me to sign for my parcel, I finished the roll of film and then brought all the stuff back inside the house before opening the large box, inside amongst a humungous amount of polystyrene chips were 4 Fidelity Elite dark slides, not only that but when I opened one it was loaded with film too. The other DDS all have their white sides facing out so I am assuming they have not yet been exposed.

I just checked on this film data website and it appears to be Kodak Portra 400 NC. I'll expose a couple later and process in Caffenol, if they come out okay I'll use the others as they should be, if not, I'll just use them for practice loading the dark slides and processing tank.

Excellent, look forward to seeing the results. I would have loved a 47mm Super Angulon but the centre filter for it was about the same price as the lens! I am desperate to get out as well. Where did you order the film from if you don't mind me asking?

I will buy the centre filter for the 47mm if I decide to keep the lens, I have it on sale or return for 14 days so I can see if it's going to suit first but I used to love my 12-24 Sigma on my 5DMk2 and as the 47mm on 4x5 is about the same AOV as 12mm on 35mm it should be fine.

The IIIb filter for the lens is £300 so it is a hefty investment.

If by the film you mean the 100 sheets of Tri-X I got it from Calumet through Amazon, they do not have it on their own website. It was £56.47 for 50 sheets (free next day shipping) which is almost the same price as their TMax 100 (£57) and 400 (£59.71). the Ilford prices are a fair bit higher at £36 for 25 sheet packs.

Thanks for the heads up, I have ordered 50 sheets to try it out, there is a minimum order of $25 and the cheapest postage was a further $17 so not quite so cheap in the end.

I bought some from here but have not received them yet: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360448520714?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 total with free shipping was £14.68

Ed, would you mind letting me know how quickly your Freestyle order comes through and how customs deals with it, if they slap on any charges on it at all? I'm very tempted by some of their prices, but firm feedback from someone in Film & Conventional is always nice to have before proceeding.

No problem, they do do quicker deliveries but the shipping cost goes up considerably then.

Yup, some of the shipping costs go up to a staggering amount! I take it you were shipping using FIMS?

Depends how often and how much you shoot. Typically I shoot 6 sheets at a time because thats how many I can process in a tank at the moment and I don't want to lug around too many film holders (each one hold 2 sheets of film). So that would be about 4 outings for me from a 25 sheet box.

yes, FIMS insured, for an extra dollar it was a no-brainer.

Indeed. I look forward to the feedback on the Freestyle experience in the coming weeks.

arr yeah, forgot about having to carry around alot of holders.. its not that expensive compared to other formats then as most people will fire off lots of shots.

indeed I've gone out with 4x DDS so 8 sheets of film and 7hours later come back with almost half of it unexposed. You do stop and think with a view camera, look at the glass and ponder 'its a nice image but is it worth a sheet of film to see it again' kinda thing.

I've got one of those on a speed graphic right next to me, I really should get testing it properly!

My Aero-Ektar emits about 1 uSv/h (1 micro Sievert per hour) of radiation from the rear element. fwiw a banana contains about 0.1uSv, its not worrkying me and I won't be crafting any lead darkslides based on this info.

Covering a radioactive source that emits Beta particles with any high Z(atomic number) material (lead darkslide) is the worst thing you can do as due to Bremsstrahlung all you would do is make X-rays. Best things to cover a beta source are low Z materials such as polythene or perspex.
