Hi folks

I'm heading over to Liverpool to see a friend in the first weekend of July. I go over fairly regularly, 4 times a year usually for a long weekend.

We usually end up taking a road trip on one of the days and this time we're looking at Snowdonia, especially the lake near the Devils Kitchen and then on to Dinorwic for a look around the quarry.

I always take a camera, usually my D300 with a couple of lenses and a tripod. I don't drive so I get the bus at 6am from my house up the coast and then get the coach over to Liverpool. Its a lot of travelling with photo gear and personal items for the weekend away. I'm a bit stuck on gear as I feel this is going to be a once only trip so want to make the best of it.

I can't find much information about what Devils Kitchen is like for access (apart from 3 lines from a snowdonia walking website that said there is a path around the lake thats a couple of miles long). Also I've seen some videos on YouTube of Dinorwic but nothing relating to photography.

Has anyone from here been? Whats it like getting around the quarry and Devils Kitchen? Any particular spots to look out for? (hoping to get some photos of the mountains, some big landscape shots I guess)

Thanks :)

The Devil's Kitchen itself is a rock scramble up a gulley in the cliffs. I guess what you mean is Cwm Idwal? It's accessed from opposite the west end of Llyn Ogwen and yes there is a walk round the lake (Llyn Idwal). Unless you want to do some scrambling, when you get to the end of the lake take the path that goes at low level close to the lake. The high level route takes you up by Idwal Crags and you get a pretty spectacular view down over the lake, but getting back down again (I'm assuming you go clockwise round the lake) is a bit 'interesting' if you're carrying camera gear and haven't done any scrambling/climbing. Google 'Cwm Idwal'.

Yes sorry, the lake is what I was meaning rather than Devils Kitchen itself.

Thanks for the info, found loads more from google now I know the name of the lake!

Dinorwig I've been around a few times...

There's a public path running right through the middle of it that's very popular. You can park at the bottom in the large layby at the side of Llyn Peris or you can drive up through Dinorwig village and park at the bus turn point and walk in that way. That has the advantage of starting you off halfway up the quarry. All the interesting stuff is the wrong side of the fence of course.;)

Thats great, just what I needed to know. Liking the images in your Flickr feed, looks like quite an amazing place to explore.

Don't mind a bit of fence hopping to get to some of the interesting stuff.

The stairway up to the higher levels is interesting - especially coming down in the wet!!!

Yeah I saw a video on YouTube of someone taking a couple of tumbles around there. Got my walking boots on standby!

Haven't been up since last summer, they do patrol more around now though since there's obviously a lot more footfall in silly season. I'll be up soon though to play with the new Infra Red camera.

Hmm, I'll keep my eyes peeled. Hopefully I can get in to some of the interesting areas without getting arrested.
