smooth tones in landscapes?

Im finding it hard to achieve the smooth pastel like tones often found in professional landscape photos, i know alot is to do with lighting conditions etc but iam sure there are some kind of cleaver processing techniques going on. the ones that spring to mind are photos from the time catcher team especially Adam Burton

I've had a quick look at Adam Burton's site, and it doesn't look to me as if there's too much digital trickery going on. Just a lot of wonderful natural landscapes.

As they say, 1/125 sec at f8 and be there!

I agree - no doubt quality equipment and the light are what makes these pictures. Choosing the time of day carefully to get the most interesting light is half the battle in landscape.

The golden hour.., very early in the morning or just before sunset. At that time the light is softer and more diffused so you don't get harsh shadows.
