No
my smallest zoom is the 24-105L - ie not small

Then I saw the new panny 4/3rd zoom lens this morning

Lightning AF and IS built in

got me thinking how useful it would be to have a 'pancake' lens on my 5dmk2
But there aren't any

so whats the smallest zoom lens I could get?
would be nice to turn the 5d into a 'compact' for travel :)

both very interesting pancakes (primes)

any small zoom experience out there?

Joining the belief that you can get pancake lenses: how about the Pentax SMC 40mm f/2.8 pancake coupled with a Pentax to Canon (K-mount to EOS) adapter? As long as the adapter isn't massive, it'll be quite compact.

But, smallest zoom? I guess the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is reasonably compact, and a lot of the consumer zooms are very compact but they will be a step down from your L lens. Besides, even if the lens is small what's the point when the lens cap (the 5dmkII) is nearly a kilogram anyway? There's only a limit to how far you can go, really.

The Tamron is a crop only lens isnt it?

The old Canon 28-105 3.5-5.6 I inherited was pretty small but the image quality wasnt much to write home about.

Theres the 70-300 IS DO of course that pretty short for a tele and the old 20-35mm 3.5-45.6 wideangle zoom thats only 340 grams.

lol
very true

but surely there's a market for this stuff
look at all the 4/3rds, EVIL, superzoom and 'pro compact cameras taking off and selling very well

IMO size wise they aren't that much smaller than an SLR (esp entry level crops)
I used to have a 450d and with the kit lens it was really nice and compact

Apologies for the misinformation; second coffee of the day is urgently needed

That combination of APS-C sensor and kit lens was light, because the body and amount of electronics were all less, the sensor was a third smaller, the lens was slower and had significantly less focal range (and worse built). There is a market for compact photo equipment (I balk at the idea of regularly carrying say a Nikon D3s and a 70-200 f/2.8 VRII everywhere, let alone some of the lighter combinations) but there is a limit to the extent you can do so when you have to cover that large full frame sensor, and at that price point there is a desire for tough, well built lenses, weather proofed bodies and the like. Comes with the price territory, really.
