Hi,

Despite having a Nissin Di866 II I don;t find I use it all that much and I'm thinking it may be down to size.

Is the Canon 430EX II much smaller and still useful for fill flash using HSS (my daughter runs round very quickly and I like to have higher that set to higher than 200)

I came this >< close to getting one today for £155 in the classified but thought I'd have tea first - maybe its a sign I need more research :)

Cheers

Sorry, I should have been clearer - yes.

To throw a little more in the mix I often use the 70-200 2.8, so you wouldn't think it would be an issue but now I wonder if a smaller flash would have the power.

Do you think the 270EX II would be of any use?

270EX is a great little gun, more powerful than the spec suggests (need to compare at same zoom head settings) and nothing else quite like it does HSS. Great at close range for direct HSS, or bouncing with high ISO, but it's no Nissin 866. Recyle time is slow when it's flat out too, ie mostly.

Your second post really doesn't stack up  Stick with the Nissin, get to use it properly and you'll love it.

This bit ^

They are an excellent bit of kit once you're used to them.

So, being a thinkie you're saying get used to it, its a much better flash.

Basically, yes. Certainly don't sell it.

But judging by the pic you posted on POTN, 270EX would handle that in HSS no probs. But only fired direct, don't move further back, and don't need fast recycle.

Best thing about the 270EX is it's shirt-pocketable :)

Oh, I was never planning on selling as I'm just starting to rekindle my studio interest so would want it for that anyway.

The shirt pocketable part is what draws me, I know that I'll always be more self conscious with a great big flash sat on the camera, as I was when I used to own the 100-400 where the white lens drew more attention than I was comfortable with, that was one of the reasons for getting the 50-500 OS, good IQ plus despite its size not as many people look.
