Hi guys, I am looking for a small manual 35mm camera with an LCD screen like on the top of current DSLRs and autofocus and all for not too much if possible with a 50mm lens :)

Getting a trip 35 to go in my pocket but would like something that gave me all the bells and whistles in a small package aswell.

A manual camera with all the bells and whistles is a bit of a contradiction .

A Nikon F65 or F80 sounds like it would fit the bill. Will AF with any AF F mount lens and 50mm screw driven lenses are cheap as French fries! Can't remember the Canon, Minolta and Pentax equivalents but they'll all do the same job.

something like a EOS30 ?

pretty much the same shape/size as a EOS450D but a bit lighter iirc (its been a while since it came out of the bag in all honesty)

What I meant was manual, lcd display, autofocus and small/compact 35mm, by all the bells and whistles I meant relative to a trip 35, nothing like todays DSLRs bells and whistles.

H'mm if this camera exists it would now be a collectors item and go for silly prices.

I don't think it really exists! Almost all of the cameras with a top LCD and autofocus tend to have motor drives, which means they usually aren't small or compact.

The Trip is nothing like an SLR so I'm a bit confused, are you after an SLR or a compact?

Which 50mm lenses are these ? The reason I ask is that I have a F80 and am struggling to find a decent 50mm lens for it.

Thank you for a helpful answer, I did think it might be a bit of a stretch but some of the replies have been less than helpful!

The trip 35 was mentioned as its going to go everywhere with me, I wanted something smallish and light to go in a bag with the features I mentioned, maybe if people actually read hwat I posted they would know that though...(if that's out of turn just ignore it, I am having a less than good week so may just being overly sensitive)

Matt, appreciate your comment at my reply but I assure you, the other forum regulars are only trying to work out exactly what your requirements are so they can try and recommend something suitable!

Quite a lot of the later compact film cameras meet quite a few of the requirements - autofocus, an LCD (albeit usually quite a basic one), small and compact - but they rarely have 50mm lenses, and of course they usually don't have interchangeable lens mounts (which I'm guessing is why you wanted an SLR).

Matt, I think people really are trying to be helpful, these long chains of short posts can get confusing! There are lots of lovely small SLRs, but AFAIK they tend to be fairly simple manual focus ones, which quite a lot of folk here like, bit of a reaction to the digital world they often also inhabit.

Size being quite difficult to judge, you may be better going into a used camera shop if there is one near you. Nothing like feeling the heft of these things in your hand.

The best autofocus Pentax is the MZ-S, which I don't think is huge, but they go for >£200 so not pennies. Some of the other late Pentaxes are MUCH cheaper, possibly for a reason, but they may also be good. Listen to the other guys re Nikons etc, I don't know anything about them. Some folk really like the single-digit Olys, but I suspect they pre-date the era of LCDs (again, don't know).

Why do you want an LCD on the camera, may I ask? One of the joys of film cameras is the... haptic pleasure(?)... of controlling the thing with the older style controls. But then, I've never owned a film camera with LCD, so wouldn't know!

A Nikon F65 is probably the closest to your description from me but folk are basically correct in saying your asking for something a bit mythical, in this dark and smelly room its kinda manual all the way, some folk here even shun away from batteries, terrible things make yer toes fall off :-)

Maybe something like the Hexar AF or a Ricoh GR1 or Contax T3, they might suit your requirements.

Contax is good for sure.
auction a kidney mind.

I know people are mostly trying to be helpful its just when your what you thought was a simple request ends up getting taken off on tangents :P

Anyway the ricoh g1, hexar af and contax t3 look almost like exactly what I am after, just a bit out of my price range hehe, I think I will get an SLR for AF and more controls / features and a trip for my pocket and use them alongside my om10.

Sorry Matt but I read the the thread from start to finish and see only suggestions a few query questions and general advice all I see is your general question fleshed out no unhelpful answers, i fact I would go as far to say this section of the forum the old school room is the friendliest of the lot my opinion.

Well you confused everyone in your first post, in mentioning manual and AF together..so what you want is a camera to wind on manually with AF OR a small camera where you can switch between Manual focusing and Af OR a small camera where you can set exposure manually and the option of auo-exposure and AF for quick snaps

The only SLR that I can think of that has manual film advance & a top LCD is a Minolta 9000. I don't think that it is that small though.

we like going off on tangents here ,,,only the other day i was out with a tlr and i got talking to someone with a di a di a di ,,you know the other type of camera ,,and we both agreed that as long as we were out taking pictures it didnt matter what we used ,,anyway ,i said,,,

oh alright :coat:

Nikon F55 etc will do, Pentax MZ-S too, not sure if lower spec MZ series bodies have an LCD though, don't know about other brands. None are exactly compact, especially with a 50mm lens, the F55 mentioned weighs next to nothing though and is very quiet, I can tell you that from experience.

Which 50mm lenses are these ? The reason I ask is that I have a F80 and am struggling to find a decent 50mm lens for it.

Lenses that will autofocus on the F80 are:

Nikon 50mm F/1.8 AF
Nikon 50mm F/1.8D AF
Nikon 50mm F/1.4D AF
Nikon 50mm F/1.8G AF-S
Nikon 50mm F/1.4G AF-S
Among others which I may have missed...

These lenses will all autofocus on the F80 I believe. You also have lenses such as the zeiss 50mm lenses for F mount and any F mount nikon 50mm pre AF.

You also have the option of the sigma 50mm's

I don't quit see how you have not managed to find these? Unless you define decent as perfect? :D if so, the Zeiss might be your only option ;)

^^^^^^

I think it was the Lenses linked to the chip as chips quote that could not be found. :)
