Yes
I didn't really think this through properly, having just rebuilt my system in Itx format with no optical drives I've now given up on finding download versions of some software and need to purchase a small cd drive, doesn't need to be a writer or anything fancy, size is most important and the smaller the better as it will spend most of its life tucked away in a drawer any recommendations?

I have an older version of this which works well for me. Sure there will be similar ones from other makers.

USB powered so no additional brick.

Would that not mean you would need small DVD's to play in it?:p

Had a Samsung drive for years with no problem, think they are still about £30 or so.

There's plenty of slim, portable drives around, just a couple of cm larger than a disc, all for about £20. Alternatively is there a computer you could borrow to copy the software onto a USB stick?

I use the older version of this one: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/compo...108-external-usb-dvd-writer-21743664-pdt.html

It is only £19.99 at PC World and is usb powered. However the main attraction for me is that this little machine is actually extremely powerful and will allow to set the booktype of the DVD when you write one to DVD-ROM. Very good for compatibility on old and new machines....Lite-On EBAU108

Thanks for the help everyone put Bythesea's suggestion into Amazon and it offered me the new version for £17, happy with that.
