Just wondering if anyone has been to Slovenia in the winter and if so what is it like?

There's a few places that I want to photograph and I was wondering what public transport is like or if it's best to hire a car?

Any other tips or recommendations would be welcome :)

Been three or four times skiing. Kranjska Gora and over into Austria.
Obviously cold and snowy higher up. Driving is fine as roads are not busy. Not sure of public transport though

Revisiting this thread as I didn't go :(

Now looking to visit at the beginning of March and specifically want to visit Lake Bled.

So I'm looking for info on where to stay, if a hire car is needed to get around and recommendations for places to visit and photograph.

I'm guessing there's not that much there so maybe a long weekend unless there is more that I think?

Thanks :)

Unless you stay near lake bled you'll need a hire car.
Went there in 1985 when it was still Yugoslavia.

A lot of the mountain roads close as early as October so really you might not be able to get far beyond Bled or Kranjska Gora, both very fine places.... I'm sure I've seen a bus or a train line but really why not get a car and travel decently?

Thanks for the replies.

I had a look on youtube last night and there seems to be more there than I thought so a hire car is probably a good idea.

What is the weather usually like in early March? is it a case getting a 4x4 just in case or is there not that much snow.

Also any recommendations on where to stay?

I really am leaving my research until the last minute but I was planning on going to Iceland during that week but changed my mind as I want to go somewhere new.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Slovenia 2 years ago and can't wait to return. I agree about getting a hire car, it certainly opens up your options of visiting places off the bus routes etc. We stayed in Lake Bled which was ideal for us, nice walks around the lake, good cafes/restaurants, interesting castle and church on the lake to visit. We stayed in Hotel Jelovica which was ok, have a look on Trip Advisor for the latest recommends.
Here's just a few places we enjoyed visiting:-
Lake Bohinj, not a long drive from Bled and this can be linked with a trip up the Žičnice Vogel cable car for a wander around the mountains with amazing views of the lake and beyond.....not sure about in March what the mountains will be like, but worth enquiring.
Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle. The caves are a very touristy.....but they are huge and well worth a trip, nothing like we have over here by a long way. The cave is very photogenic, both of these can be a linked visit.
Ljubljana Old and new town worth a day visit and easy bus ride from Lake Bled, we did this rather than take the hire car.
Vintgar gorge, lovely 1.6Km gorge with a timber boardwalk and bridges for access. Located near Lake Bled.
Triglav National Park is amazing, no need for high level walks to appreciate the small villages and scenery.

I hope the above helps a little…...enjoy.

That is great thanks, gives me something to work and the more I look into the more I'm looking forward to it.

I thought about just doing a long weekend as I didn't think there was much there but looks like I'll need a good few days now :)

I went there a few years ago without a car, as part of a wider trip. I agree with mulch's recommend of Lake Bohinj, we got there with a bus from Lake Bled without much trouble.
