Hi all, I will be getting a new camera bag for my birthday and I was hoping you guys had experience of these bags.

I like the idea and design of these bags but I was wondering which I need to take the following gear:

350D (or 40D) with attached grip
17-85 IS USM
70-300 IS USM
nifty fifty
canon 100mm macro
430 EX flash

I'm guessing that all the other gubbins I take (charger, filters mem cards etc) will go into the top part of the bag so its the camera compartment that I am concerned about.

Ideally I would want it to be able to take the camera attached to the 70-300 lens so that I can take it straight from the bag on track days without having to swap lenses.

Which would you all recommend?

I have the 200 AW, It holds my D80 with grip with Sigma 70-300 attached. It also holds my 18-135 Nikkor and Sigma 10-20 and in the space under the 70-300, my Archos AV500. There is space either side of the body and grip but not enough to accomodate my SB600.

Additionally there is a couple of spaces at the rear of the case, (which hold my charger and mains lead) try as I might, they won't take my SB600. The flash will however sit in the top compartment. But that's not as well protected as the main one.

I regret not getting the 300AW, but I've aiways got my old Billingham to fall back on.

I suspect, like mine, your kit will grow. Personally I'd go for the 300.

I'd struggle to fit my D200 in my AW200 if I had a grip attached to it I think. Not sure how much smaller the 350D would be though... just something to consider, if you'd like to be able to store it with the grip attached.

ETA looks like ken has answered the grip dilema for you :)

Hey there Braeden ... ... long time no communicate ...

I did have the AW 200 until recently and have upgraded to the 300 version ... :D

The main reason was that my D200 did not fit comfortably with the Grip attached ... ... I assume the same would apply to the 40D but I am guessing you would probably be alright with the 350D ... :suspect:

Either way I would suggest you take most of your gear to your local Jessops and try the fit and the feel ... ... these bags are not everybody's CoT imgo ... ;)

Good luck with it ...

:p

I had the 200 and my 400d with grip and 70-300 fitted nice and snug, but fwiw I would and did get the 300 because the 200 wont take anything much larger than the 70-300 fitted.

Thanks for all the replies (and Hi Venom )

This is all in an effort to get me back into photography and the fact that I start a BTEC in photography in just under 3 weeks is sure to help) so hopefully I will be communicating more in the very near future :woot:

It looks like I am going to go for the 300 as I will definitely be getting the 40D and the grip and if you guys struggle with your prosumers I don't want to have the same problems.

Probably a wise decision m8 ... ... but it really is worth trying the bag/s first ... and Jessops may even let you bung a 40D in c/with Grip to try them for size ...

:p

300 should keep you going for a while. If you get the 200 then one day you'll go 'b****r, no more space' then buy a 300 anyway.

Which reminds me - must keep an eye out for the 400... :D

The exact position im in at the moment, bought a 200aw back in march, and now need the 300aw. I might go completely different an import a crumpler brazillion dollar home. That bag looks excellent.

I've currently got the 200 and it will take a 20D with grip attached with a 17-55 f/2.8 IS attached and a 70-200 f/2.8IS alongside it. Alternatively you could rearrange the dividers so that the 20D with grip and 70-200 f/2.8 attached will fit in "top to bottom", resting on the dividers with the 17-55 underneath along with some bits'n bobs.

A quick check of lens dimensions shows that the 70-300 is narrower and only 30mm longer than a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 Macro. Therefore based on previous kit owned and put into this bag I believe you could fit the 40D with grip and 70-300 in the central compartment with the 100mm stood on it's end in one of the copartments on the left with the 17-85 behind it on the same side. The nifty in the compartment on the right probably along with the charger.

The top pocket would then take the flash and some filters and the pouch on the outside of the flap for the main storage area would take the cable for the charger while the pocket on the inside would take care of the memory cards.

Just out of interest... why do feel you need to take a battery charger with you when you go out and about? Given how long it takes to charge a battery it would seem more logical to me to buy a second battery if you envisage running out of battery power in a studio rather than losing shooting time waiting for it to charger and if you're outside then there'll surely be nowhere to plug the charger in?

The space the charger is taking up could be used for something else then...for example my rocket blower sits in the outer pocket of the flap

If you'd like to "try before you buy" then why not get yourself over to Wakefield camera club and you can see if you can get all your kit in my 200 first? :D

PS the D200 is quite a bit bigger than the XXD range from Canon

HTH

Hi Chris.

The reason my charger lives in my bag isn't because I ened it when I'm out and about, its just because I'm weird and like all of my gear to be in one place :)

I do have 2 batteries in my grip at the moment and will do the same with my 40D so the chances of me ever actually running out of power is slim to say the least.

It did happen once on holiday in the lakes though, I forgot my charger and only had 2 days shooting on my SLR (this was before I had the grip and extra battery though) and I ended up having to use my 3mp compact that has no creative modes at all :(

Regarding the invite to the camera club, I'd love to come along for a visit as long as you don't meet on a Tuesday or Thursday night as I already have things to do on those nights.

Yeah the 300 will be better, the 200 would take your current load of kit but not much more, so you would have possibly outgrown it very quickly anyway

Hi Braeden,

BTW, where are going to be studying the B/TEC?

I guess I will see you a week on Monday :)

Look forward to seeing you there then! :D

Will the B/tec be a full time course or evenings. I'm trying to find a course I can do that's evenings only and at a time/distance suitable for a ~6pm start from Pontefract. The best I've found so far is GCE 'O' level at Wath which starts at 6:30. :shake:

It's Tuesday evenings from 6pm until 9pm every week.

You can do it for one year (level 2) or 2 years (levels 2 and 3).

Enrollment for the course is this week and I will be going tomorrow night.

Back on topic for a sec, I went round a few stores over the bank holiday weekend to see what I thought fo the slingshots, and although they didn't have the 300 in stock, I did get to see the smaller versions so I ordered one from WE yesterday which is now here

I'm glad I went for the 300, it is certainly big enough and even has space for an extra toy or two in there ;)
