We're going to Slimbridge on Sunday. First time. Going on a bus that will get there at approx 11AM and leave at 4PM. 5 hours max including time for eats & drinks (Probably minimal).

Don't want to waste the day so any clues as to which bit is the best to visit? Can't expect to do an in depth tour in the time available, and it looks quite a big spot.

Is there a large captive area a la Martin Mere, and if so is there anything different in there? Presumably the winter visitors are still there with the usual domestic residents. But anything worth looking out for? Anything not worth visiting at this time of year?

Will definitely be wearing wellies!!!

You'll be very fortunate to see a kingfisher in the Kingfisher Hide (top left) so you might want to give that a miss.
There's a nice little 'feeder' area at the Knott Hide (top right) where you can get some good 'finch' types and there are some bank voles there as well.
4/5 hours should give you a good look around the site.
Stout shoes but I've never needed wellies :)

Basically what Gramps said, I mite see you down there as are be popping down this weekend :) I also find the Robbie Garnett Hide ( top right on the map ) great for in flight shots and great to watch thousands of birds out on the flooded fields :)

I was at Slimbridge yesterday morning at there was a male kingfisher around for about 15 minutes before flying off, unfortunately in my haste to get the shots didnt check the setting and shot to slow for handheld and all came out blurred :(:(
