Morning,

Just looking for some suggestions as to a cheap, small but reasonably modern slide projector. Any ideas?

Cheers

Andy

I still have a Braun Paximat that I bought in the 80's. It has a wired remote control, autofocus and uses the standard slide holders. It's the sort of thing you should be able to pick at a car boot for a small sum. Mines still going well, although I haven't used it for a while.

Dunno about new ones but the Kodak Carousel is very good if you can pick one up S/H....last year (IIRC) at a boot sale:- a professional model with stacks of extras was offered for £25, I've got a similar one so wasn't interested.

Thanks chaps, do either of these take 120 slides?

Andy

Your going to find it difficult to find a modern projector which takes 120 slides that doesn't cost a fortune, the few that I have seen usually only do up to 6x6 and are quite old most being from the 1950's to 60's. The bottom fell out of the medium format slide projector market as 35mm was good enough and cheaper for nearly all applications and for medium format most used a lightbox.

Hay Andy. Found this on the bay 200783267871

Real camera co usually have a few in stock, might be worth giving them a ring to see if they can sort you out with one, or at least an idea of which one to go for :)

Thanks Trev, have it on my watch list now.

Good idea Rob, I shall probably pop up there at the weekend.

Having had a good look at this I think that the 120 slide cartridge actually refers to the number of slides it will hold.

As others have pointed out if your looking for a slide projector to take 120 film then you are rather limited.

The ones from the 1950's/1960's I doubt would be working now nor very safe unless your good with fixing electricals, plus you might struggle to get bulbs for them now.

As far as I know there were only two manufactures that made 120 projectors one was Rollei the other Hasselblad and as you can guess with names liek that they ain't going to be cheap :)

Unless your lucky.

Found one on Ebay but its in Denmark

Ouch, don't think thats the one for me.......many gold coins.

So basically unless I want to spend a fortune its a waste of time shooting 120 slide film? Thats a shame I can imagine they would look fantastic.

Andy

If you can find an old one then it would be ok if you could get someone to test it and replace all the capacitors etc that will be buggered. Bulbs aren't probably such an issue as there are bound to be generic replacements or a way of getting a new bulb into an old holder.

This is probably a dumb ass idea but what do slides look like when viewed via an ohp?

If it were me I'd just be making something with a torch and some card board :D

You want to watch those ancient projectors - I had use of one from the '60s and it was a horrible thing. It used a big tungsten type bulb right behind slide and everything got very, very hot. So much so, the slides used to bend and kink, and the case was too hot to touch. The one I then got in the 1980s (Kindermann I think) is a much better affair.

Not a waste no, they do look fantastic when you put them up against the window / throw them up on a lightbox

It's a nice feeling being able to have a miniature stained glass window with your photo on it :D

Thanks for that Suz, there are no shortage of 35mm projectors, a Rollei one just went for £25 on the bay, but I really wanted one that would show 120 slides. Seems I am to be thwarted.

Thinking about it, an enlarger that takes 120 film and has the ability to swivel the head 90 degrees would work. Wouldn't be very bright though.

Try asking in your local Freecycle/Freegle group online as well, i asked for one, took a couple of weeks but i finally got a reply from a guy who only lived a few streets away. Got a GAF 503 Synchro though it didn't have a carousel but found one on ebay for £4 and i have myself a working slide projector. Also quite easy to find replacement bulbs online as well.

Quite a shock when i first projected, made me realise how crap i was at scanning my slides.

Thanks Trev, that would seem to be the thing but again its way too much gold. I wouldn't use it often enough to justify the outlay.

Not a bad idea and I'm sure it would work but again I would only needing it occasionally so probably not worth the hassle.

Not what you really wanted either but I thought it was a really cool idea. Wonder whether you could hack it to produce an svideo or hdmi out???

Now then, this could be the thing. Obviously doesn't project but it would be good enough to view the loveliness on.....mmmm, I shall ponder all these sugestions for a while.

Cheers

One little thing has been bugging me and that is you don't appear to have a 35mm slide projector atm, so maybe you haven't seen how amazing projected 35mm slides are?

A 35mm slide projected onto an old fashioned screen about 5ft wide is awsome. To get the same awsomeness from 120mm you will need a screen the size of a bus.

I went to 120 not because I wanted to project (which is still a great way to show photos) but because I wanted sharper scans and prints. So if you want to project, use 35mm, or, if you want super sharpness in printing or scanning, use 120?

Wise words Ken. I think maybe I am getting too hung up on the 120 MF thing.

Thanks Trev, thats more like the price I was thinking (what a cheapskate).

Hello all I'm a student at goldsmiths looking for a my slide projector for my final year degree show! Unfortunately I don't have the funds to buy a sufficient slide projector. I always shoot on 120 slide film because I find the colours are great. Ideally I would love to hire out a hassleblad projector however this is proving difficult to find :(. Does anyone have any ideas as to who I could hire from? Must be medium format. Many thanks danielle
