I got a vintage Gnome slide projector, and an old roll-up screen to project the slides.

The slides look dull when projected, and the colours are not vivid, and the focus rather not so sharp. When I see the slides on a slide viewer ( 3 times magnification, Halina), they are wonderfully bright, vivid colours and great focus.

Obviously, its the projector; but whats the solution? Do the bulbs get weaker with time, or is it the lens? Should I get another better projector?

What would be a reasonable priced projector brand?

Or should I stick to a good quality slide viewer?

Dunno if it's the projector Ujjwal, more likely the screen to be honest - what's the reflectivity?

I got 2 screens Arthur. One is matte; and the other is more reflective. The reflective ones have a kind of shiny granular stuff stuck on the screen.

The matte one shows better colour than the shiny one....

Does the room need to be pitch dark for the best effect?

Well, the darker the better but old projectors are just that - old. If all's clean and tidy then it will be as bright as it gets, changing to a brighter bulb may cause more damage than it's worth if you go outside the original spec.

Two weeks ago saw a lovely Kodak carousel at the bootie with two lenses (I have an older model), the price was £30 but I reckoned you could have haggled the price down easily.

please do buy for me if you find it again; I promise, I'll pay...

or let me know where I can get one...

The only problem with bargains (or things you want cheap) is:- you never know when they are going to turn up. There are some old things I want, that I have been waiting for 2 years (at boot sales).
The only advice I can give is to keep your eyes open everywhere even adverts in shop windows, recycle web sites, even your local council dump........I've had some bargains from gumtree.com and is also good for free stuff.

Indeed.....

In case you ( or anyone else ) notice a good projector anywhere, please pick it up for me, or let me know about it.

Try replacing the bulb and if that doesn't help check the lens out to see if its got fungus which is unlikely I know. If it is you can usually get 85mm f2.8 slide projector lenses quite cheaply just check the lens diameter is the same as it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

I would say it's the bulb. although saying that my slide projector a Hanimex 800S is not all that bright either

It works better when the room is almost pitch black

I finally got a Rollei P35 A yesterday; for the princely sum of 99p.

What a world of difference a good projector makes. I am going to throw the Gnome ***** in the trash bin.

Of course the pulley band in the Rollei promptly broke, which rendered the remote changer unusable. There is no hope of getting a spare. I have kind of fixed it up with a super glue, but I have no hope of it holding for long with that heat in there. Even with physically pulling and pushing the slides in and out, its a great projector to watch slides on. I wonder how great it will be on the Leica ones...

Thanks Arthur for your suggestion about the Rollei
