Has anyone else experienced 'slackness', for want of a better word, in their 70-200 f2.8? There is slight but noticeable movement between the differeent parts of the lens bodyin my copy and I can't help but think that it does nothing for the performance of the lens.

I've got a lot of experience of Canon 70-200s. (I probably own more of them than anyone else here.) Some of them can develop looseness in the barrel and the good news is that some of these can be fixed yourself.

So which model is it? Non-IS, IS Mk I, or IS Mk II?

Then please describe the slackness as precisely as you can. An annotated picture of a lens, showing exactly where the movement is, would help, and I need to know whether the movement is sliding, wobbling, rotating, flexing, or what.

It's the Mark 1 IS version. I think 'wobbling'is the best way to describe it. I had it looked at by the CPS team at Wimbledon. It was much better for a few days then returned to its wobbly state. They said they couldn't do any more and to send it off to get serviced.

So whereabouts in the lens is this 'wobbling' happening? Which bit is wobbling relative to which other bit? A diagram would help.

Sounds like the screws need tightening. I have to do mine each time I use it (Mk II).

It's gone off to Fixation - a whopping big estimate came straight back saying they needed to replace a barrel and various mounts and collars because of 'impact/physical' damage. My recent experience with Canon gear is not good and suggests that their professional gear is nowehere near as durable as they make out. My kit gets well used but it never gets abused to the extent that I expect to have to get it repaired at such great cost.

Do you carry your kit in a Peli case?Heard some horror stories of lens's getting rattled loose.I am talking from experience.

Don't use a Peli but a soft, wheeled ThinkTank case. That's an interesting (and depressing) pount you've raised but I'm still a bit miffed with the way my Canon kit is standing up to the wear and tear I give it.

Don't send it to Fixation. Send it to Elstree. It'll be far cheaper!
