Can someone impart some wisdom please. How does the skyport know that the canon 6d is firing without an internal flash being present? I have attached it using the hotshoe and the test button works

If you've put it on the hotshoe, then the hotshoe closes the circuit when you fire the shutter, just like a hotshoe flash.
