Brand new to photography so this looked like fun. I'm going out to South Africa for a year and hoping to get some time to take photos and wanted something light and travel worthy. It's possible I won't be able to keep up with the pace but we can hope.

((New photo below in a following post))

Was out today taking photos of the falling snow and with Curved at the forefront of my mind I thought. "Hey, bells are curved"

Anyway, thats my deal. C+C welcomed.

Cheers,
Skips

hello and welcome to the forum and the 52ers !

Like the bell but find the trees a bit distracting.

Have fun in South Africa.

Hi Skippy,
This challenge is a great way to get to grips with your camera and learn new things so I hope that you keep it up and that we get South African images in the rest of your thread.

The bell was a good spot for this week's theme
I'm not too sure about the big block of white wall on the left though or the trees in the background (they distract a bit) . . . perhaps you could have tried a different angle - maybe got the bell straight on. It looks like it's attached to some sort of wooden plaque, so that might have made a more interesting shot with the bell really being the main focal point.

Hey Skips, im in the same situation as you. Great way for learning taking part in this I think.
Interesting choice of subject for the challenge. Repeating the above really, did you take a few shots of this from alternate angles? The trees are slightly distracting, as specially as they are in sharp focus also. The curly black iron thing at the top runs out of the frame aswell, so would probably crop this out, aswell as some of the white wall.

Look forward to seeing more from you in the coming weeks, especially when you are in South Africa, big advantage there!

Hi Skips, welcome to the 52's. I can't see the exif, so can't tell what it was shot with. It was an excellent spot with that bell and certainly shows curves. It might be better to focus in more on the bell, rather than have so many other components in the shot... cropping in, losing the wall, the sky, and leaving a block of trees behind, helps focus on the curve of the bell.

Currently stuck away from home and my computer due to snow, when I get back I will try different shots. My camera is an F70EXR (Actually F72EXR, but as far as I can tell the only difference is that its black and Jessops only) Probably cant get the EXIF as I edited in picnik down to 800x600 to fit the forum.

All comments sound like good ideas. (Am I allowed to reshoot btw?)

Like I said the camera is P&S so I'm limited with depth of field etc...might see if the pro photography mode will work on it, apparently takes a few photos and then blurs the background O_o

But yeah, cute little camera, very light and should be good for travelling with. 10x optical zoom too which is quite handy and was smack bang in the middle of my price range.

So, I failed to get a decent photo of that bell...too much stuff in the background whichever way it looked (will try again later or maybe try some photo editing) anyway was on the way back home today and thought I might be able to use this instead. Focus is a little weird but I quite like the way it came out.

Was just me playing about with taking photos from a different angle.

(Bonus points if you can guess what it is)

Ah, looks like a bus handle to me. A really unusual angle from an everyday object, nice one :)

That second pic has a really weird effect on my eyes when I scroll the screen. Kind funky though!

Thanks :)

Got some very odd looks on my bus home trying to take this.

Excellent I wouldn't have ever guessed what this was.

I bet!

I like this much more than the bell photo - and for a P&S it's a very impressive bit of photography
Just shows what you can do with the right angle and a bit of inspiration.

Really interesting perspective and I love the optical illusion when you scroll up and down the screen.

Interesting angle and well spotted.

You might want to resize before the mods spot it though (800px max on the long side).

Quite like the bell actually.
Though agree the branches etc are somewhat distracting.
Perhaps a shallower DOF would have done the trick. :)
Welcome to TP and the 52' too!
Very friendly and helpful place :)

Couldn't find a good way to make this look good as a whole banana, so as I was also slightly hungry at the time I decided to open it up and take a bite.

I bought a pet banana
and I tried to teach him tricks,
but he wasn't any good at
catching balls or fetching sticks.

He could never catch a Frisbee,
and he wouldn't sit or speak,
though we practiced every afternoon
and evening for a week.

He refused to shake or wave or crawl
or beg or take a bow,
and I tried, but couldn't make him bark
or get him to meow.

He was terrible at playing dead.
He couldn't jump a rope.
When he wouldn't do a single trick
I simply gave up hope.

Though I liked my pet banana,
I returned him with regret.
Boy, I sure do hope this watermelon
makes a better pet.

Thanks guys, had fun taking it...tbh I don't really know why the banana. I have to level with you, I actually photographed the banana before picking the poem. I'm not really sure why I ended up doing it, guess I'm just at that stage with my camera where I think something is vaguely interesting and just take a photo. Banana in a cup was just me being silly but I think it turned out quite nice...kinda like a flower.

Funny Poem ;), the shot works well with it.

Very funny!
Great shot to go with it too.

Not sure what's happening in the top right corner, have you just caught the end of the work surface in shot? Just a tiny crop would fix that.

Compositionally it's very good and I'm surprised at the amount of detail that you've captured in the skin considering you're just using a P&S.
Well Done.

Never before have so many started, and then so many to give up so easily... :shake:

Heh, too right. Sorry guys, Like I said at the start would be moving to South Africa, what I didn't know is that the place I'm staying has no internet access and the only computer I can get internet access on easily is limited to 10 minutes a day. So kinda limited to essentials like contacting family etc.

Will lurk and see what people are up to from time to time but don't think I will be able to contribute much.

Sorry bout that. Maybe next year.
