Skill for natural light photography

Practise, Practise and Practise

And learn from images you like, look how the photographer has used the light, probably some form of control possibly, flags, reflectors or sometimes balanced with flash possibly. work out what you like and try to emulate it, in your own style.

Good link.

If you want to be a good photographer, learn about how light works. In the studio, you start with nothing, no subject, no light. It's a great way to learn, and all the more rewarding because everything in the image is there because you made it happen, rather than just pointing your iPhone at a nice view.

IMHO, if enthusiasts and professionals are to make their mark in future, it will be because they know how to use light (rather than just cameras) in ways that no iPhonographer can copy..

That link makes a good point but barely scratches the surface.
I've learned far more about using natural light by experimenting in a controlled environment - a studio - then I could have any other way.

I'm now going back the other way, too - if I come across an interesting effect 'in the wild' then it's educational to recreate it in the studio.
