Simple wordpress questions

I have a simple question or two that you may be able to help me with.

When uploading images to wordpress should i be creating a new gallery and then adding images, or

should i be uploading images to the media section and then creating gallerys from that.

i get the impression that if i delete a gallery then i also delete the images, but if i created the gallery from the media library, the images will remain should i delete the gallery.

If i were to use nextgen gallery plug in, can i transfer my existing gallerys over?

If you delete a gallery the images will remain in the media library. Galleries are basically just the way Wordpress arranges images. You can modify the way Wordpress galleries display and function with a little bit of CSS and PHP knowledge.
