Simple Question - I think.......

I've read up on all the Lens related posts I could find both here and other reviews on the rest of the web (once I realised that there was a rest of the web :D ) and there seems to be a mixed review for just about everything.
I need a telephoto to replace the really old 70-200 AF that I have (it's misty and the AF takes a million years to lock let alone cope with the AI Servo and AI focus modes on the 30D).
Sadly funds are limited, so I'm in the £200 (ish) price bracket. General use (rather than for anything specific)

I think i've narrowed the available lenses down to the following:-

  • Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM
  • Canon 90-300mm f4.5-5.6 EF
  • Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG MACRO
  • Tamron 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2
So unless someone confuses the issue by throwing something I've overlooked into the mix, the question really is which one do I go for?.....

Thanks in advance (and apologies for another What should I do type question)......

Another one to throw in the mix is the Tamron 28-300 XR Di LD, I've had one for nearly 3 years and it rarely comes of my 30D. I'm looking at buying a 70-200 f/2.8 just now but I'll be keeping the Tamron as a "walk-about"

Cheers guys, I was leaning towards the Sigma as some of the other threads suggest that it's a better lens than the Canon ones in this price bracket (even thought the Canon USM lens lets in a half stop more light at the wide end?)
Hadn't really thought about a 28-300 as the kit lens covers the 18-55 and isn't that bad a lens, the nifty 50 covers everything in between..... Still, it's got me thinking I may have to do a bit more research, and maybe include some 200mm ones as well.....

Bah.... more surfing...

With that cash you could also look at the new Canon 55-250 IS test shots on dpreview lens section.

Or save a a little longer and get the 70-300IS (non DO) or....

Buy my Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM

Oooh, liking that - Didn't expect IS at this price, camerapricebuster list the cheapest for the 250 is £189....

Now really cofuddled - I need a lottery win really then I can just buy lost of prime L....

Hi Yobe,

I have the sigma and fine it to be good for me.

Another one to consider might be the Tamron 55-200mm f4-5.6. It's very cheap (£75-ish) and plasticy, but has really good sharp optics. Focus is a little slow and whiny though.
