Silly question time again

I'm out on the moors on Sunday taking images of fell runners wending their way along the Pennine Way. If I place my camera on a tripod and take a shot of them quite a distance away, then a bit nearer and so on … is it possible to "merge" the images to make a photograph of them travelling along the route?
