Hi Guys,

I haven't really looked around for prices yet but Jessops I think are going to be fairly competitive but I am looking for a zoom lens and had either the Sigma 70 -300mm or Tamron 70-300.

I would obviously prefer a Nikon lens but financially I don't think I will be able to save that extra bit.

I was wondering if there is any clear winner here between the two or if anyone has any experiences with these.

Before my Nikon lens I used the Tamron 70-300. And I got some fantastic shots with it. The macro is not true macro but you can get some good close ups. The only thing I found annoying is that it has no VR (Vibration resistance) so you need to have the speed quite high to keep it sharp. But that said. It was a good starter lens.

Thanks for the replies guys, the reason I am going retail is that I am about to get a little cash payout from my company as a long service award. It's not much but the way it works is, i spend the money and submit the receipt as an expense to claim back the cash.

Buying second hand, unless from some sort of retailer itself, wouldn't give me the receipt I need to claim it back. Also, I've always been a little concerned with buying things second hand. I know in the scheme of things the money we are talking about is no where near what some of the more expensive pieces of kit are but I like the idea of having some sort of warranty should something go wrong.

Hopefully a few more people will give their opinions on this but it looks like more people are siding with the Sigma so far.

Having seen results from both, and spoken to people who use both, I would say the tamron is the better lens for the money.

Although, if you can stretch to it, the Canon 55-250mm IS II blows them both out of the water in every way (Except price, it's £50 more)

Another vote for the Sigma 70-300 been brilliant so far and at a great price.

The Tamron is outstanding - the VC is really the best I've used, in fact it would be my second go to lens (after the 50-500 OS) were it not for the 70-200 2.8 I just got, shame you don;t have a Canon I could let you have mine :)

Mines on a Canon, but feel free to take a look at my flickr - this is the lens link
