sigma or Tamron 70-300 mm

I got the 300mm f4 5.6 tamron with my camera and I have just bought a 300mm sigma f4 5.6 because of the problems I had with the tamron.
The tamron seems very light hungry and there were problems with focus and sharpness at 250mm to 300mm,
so far I have had better results with it and have no cause for regret buying the sigma,

that's just the regular Sigma & not the APO - the Tamron imo is the better.
Additionally there have been problems with the Sigma 70-300mm series having their AF gears failing on Sony bodies due to the high torque motors.
 
I have the tamron and took this image at 300mm handheld, for the cost I cant fault it.

thanks for the feedback. Its just so frustrating. I think that say the sigma one is ok then i read a report that says theres a problem then I find another then read something bad about that! will keep on looking
 
if you do decide to go Sigma the 1 that you want is the Apo not the standard.
 
Ive never used the Tamron but do have the Sigma (apo version) Other than being soft wide open, its a great Lens for the money.

However, Tamrons are also very good from my experience.

If it were my money, id go with the Siggy!
 
I have the tamron and like you was looking at both. What made my mind up was being in Jessops and seeing the Tamron for £59!

I can't say I have noticed sharpness issues at all, certainly not around the 250-330mm mark as suggested.

I am delighted with my Tamron, so would recommend it. Its my most used lens.

I too have a sony and want to purchase a 70 - 300 lens and looked at the siggy APO, I e-mail sigma asking about the said problems with this lens, this was their reply

Few lenses have had this stripping problem and it is usually related to the Sony cameras force, on a conventional camera the lens will hit the stop at infinity with small force with the Sony it will be a thud and can cause damage to the gears. On the camera itself there is a fast and slow setting, the majority of people choose to use the slow ( standard AF on usual camera) to avoid these sorts of problems.

They appear to say the problem is not theirs, its sonys. The setting (AF) is not available on the a200 but might be available on new models. Its a pity that sony users have to be victims of sigma's lack of quality in their build.
