I recently purchased a 450d and have been looking for a lens that i can use for aviation photography. I am only a student so do not have loads of money to spend on a lens and was looking at the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG and was thinking of buying this until i came across the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is it really worth the extra money on me spending to get the canon version which is at the very top of my budget really. Would the image quality be better at 300mm than the sigma version. Has anybody ever used one of these lenses for taking pictures of aircraft? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

I got the sigma lens to take on holiday, as I felt wandering around Disney world all day with 3 kids carrying the 70-200mm F2.8 was a little too much. I have to say that I have been extremely happy with it. It is very, very sharp and the macro from 200-300mm is great for butterflies and dragonflies etc. If you want PM me and I will send you some samples taken on a 40D with the sigma lens. Best of all I got the lens for £129, I see it's now gone up to £159 but you never know your luck if you shop around.

In my opinion the sigma is worth every penny. Go for it.

Just noticed, are you considering the image stabilised version of the canon lens?

The Canon 70-300 IS is very good. Moved my stuff along big time.

Buy it, you won't regret it.

I had the sigma - wasnt too hapyp withit and didnt really use it that much.
its sharp - if you stop it down, but i really couldnt afford that much light loss at times and lathough i got the shot it was deleted as it was jsut too soft.
I am in the process of replacing it with the caonn 70-200mm. f/2.8 IS

Dont get me wrong for the moeny its a cracker of a lens. It has produced some good shots but you have to have very good light for it!

I have just bought the sigma APO version for £127 in Jessops which i thought was cheap so if it is not very good it doesn't really matter and i can always get the Canon lens at a later date.
