I'd just like to start by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas (although for the majority of you it's probably pretty much over!) :)

Hi everyone, first time poster, and fairly novice photographer - would just like a bit of advice on some old lenses I received today from a family friend. They were used on an old Minolta 600si 'Classic' bought new somewhere in the late- 90's. Both boxed, one is a Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 Macro, and the other a 24-70mm F3.5-5.6 (Both autofocus.)

I would quite like to use the wide angle lens for shooting video on my Canon EOS 600d, (I know it would be best to pay for a newer wide angle but my budget is tiny at the moment.) I've read on other forums about adapters which wouldn't support the autofocus, however this would not be a problem as I would primarily be shooting video. If i was to buy one of these adapters, could the lens be simply focused manually? (As I said, novice photographer)

Any other advice on how to solve my little predicament would be very appreciated :)

Cheers,

Adam

I won't get into the adapter discussion, but you do realise the 24-70 isn't wide angle when fitted to a crop camera?

It would be an almost "standard" lens of around 40mm FOV.

If your 600d came with an 18-55 kit lens, you would get better wide angle results with that.

I would attempt to sell the camera and lenses individually. You won't get much for the camera but the lenses would probably fetch enough to buy a Canon 18-55 kit lens, assuming you don't already have one.

Another recommendation to sell the Sony kit and buy regular Canon kit with the proceeds. You would easily have enough for a kit lens and might be able to pick up a Sigma 17-70 or something second-hand instead which would likely be an excellent choice.

Cheers for the help, I actually bought the 18-55 Kit lens off of a friend for £30 recently so I guess I could sell these lenses to buy something wider, although the 18mm is fairly wide (everything seems wide when you've ONLY been using a 50mm for some time, perhaps I should have bought the 600d with the kit lens after all.)

Haha, I know what you mean, I went through a phase of shooting with nothing but my 50mm, I then stuck the kit lens back on the camera and realised just how wide 18mm is!
